Default Black Wheels Finish peeling off

Has anyone else had a problem with the painted black wheels high gloss finish peeling off to leave just a dull black finish?

Nope, never has this problem. If you purchased used maybe they were poorly maintained in the past.

Im assuming that you have given the wheels a good cleaning and they are STILL dull looking...

Here is my before and after - I too thought my black rims looked dull - I used a Mother's cone sponge on a drill and Meguiars M205 polish - you can definitely see the difference:

Is it cracking or just looking dull? If it looks like it is cracking than the clear coat on the wheels could be coming off.

I sell powder coat wheels that have a deeper black and better finish than the painted stock wheels.

I had peeling and pitted wheels with 1000 miles on the clock. The break dust is a killer. I had tried a couple of pad brands and the PowerStops are the best I have found.

I had them powder coated for $100 per wheel and the local powder coater shop did a wonderful job.The guy that did the work said it looked like GM painted the face a couple of times but the majority of the wheel was just a single coat. The powder coat is still perfect 7k later.

But Discount Tire ruined two tires mounting and dismounting them. They cut the bead on one and ripped the sidewall on another. And the manger did the work! They charged me $250 for the privilege and would not admit they did it!

Sounds like the clear coat is peeling off, which I had on an aftermarket set of black wheels once upon a time.

My 2016 z51 chrome wheels are flaking and show signs of corrosion. Have not taken it in to the dealer yet though.

i put a coat of synthetic polish (finish first by liquitech) as soon as i took delivery. Also makes the brake dust come off easier.

2 of mine were chipping so I had my local wheel shop powder coat all 4 and they also machined the face of them. I really like the look off them now.

Yep - your clear coat is gone... Only way to correct it is to have it repainted / re-clear coated or power coated.

I think cleaning technique has a lot to do with keeping the gloss black wheel clear coat in good condition. Harsh wheel cleaners likely compromise the finish. I just use car wash soap when they are very dirty, and and rinse-less wash or detail spray products for light clean-ups. Dry and polish with good microfiber towels to keep from swirls and scratching, which over time will also dull the finish.

Its pretty much the same things one must do to keep a black car finish looking good.

Never use anything harsh. Clean wheels with pressure wash soap and clean water then blow dry. Same as the rest of the car

I know you black wheel guys love to bust on the chrome wheel people but the reality is, chrome is used to PROTECT the base metal. It's used on all sorts of conditions and products and has been for well over 150 years. But paint is just a "coating" no matter how good the paint is. Don't believe me? Well ask any Navy Veteran, how many times they painted their ships and they still rust. If you all love the black wheels, why don't you get black chrome wheels then? Just asking since it's just a matter of time before the paint is pitted, worn or washed off.
