Default Oil Changes

Anyone do their own oil changes? I've seen some you tube vids on jacking the vette and oil changes, so I'm about to try it myself. Any comments on types of oil & filters preferred?

Yes, changed mine a couple weekends ago:

Changing Oil (dry sump)
1) Jack up just the driver’s side, install jack stand.

2) Remove the drain plugs (2 plugs/GM part# 11562588) over a large 15 quart, low profile drain pan ($10 @ Advanced Auto).

3) Raise car slightly; remove jack stand.

4) Lower car with both drain plugs open and pan in place. Fully drains all oil from the side plug and front drain plug in dry sump.

5) Raise car, reinstall jack stand and put plugs back.

6) Remove and install new oil filter (AC PF64), remove jack stand and lower car, fill with 9.5 quarts Mobil1 ESP 0w-40 Dexos oil and reset OCM.

Resetting the OCM (Oil Change Monitor)

Scroll down to oil life remaining on the DIC (Driver Information Center, left control on the steering wheel) and press and hold the Set/Reset button.

Lots of people do their own oil changes. I recommend using OEM oil and filter.

I agree, why use anything other than what the manufacturer specifies.

Default I used to when:

A. My back was up to the crawling underneath
B. I didn't mind spilling a little, burning my fingers a little (impatient or lack of time)
C. I was charged for oil changes (got lifetime free changes on my '14 Z51 Conv 7MT...10 quarts of Mobil One a whack!)

Do I miss doing it? Honestly no but to those who do a tip of the hat

What about the oil temp.? Does the 9 1/2 qt oil add then get more oil later when you check the dip stick?

No, 9 1/2 quarts will get you to the top of the hash marks on your dipstick, so no more than that.
I actually only use 9 quarts which puts you in the middle of the hash marks on the stick which is good.
You don't want to risk overfill.

You want oil around operating temperature for checking oil level but not necessary to warm engine prior to changing oil unless you want to get burnt.
I let oil drain for about 30 minutes.

Checking Oil:

1. To obtain an accurate engine oil level reading, warm up the engine to at least 175°F (80°C). Cold oil will not give a correct oil level reading.

2. Once the engine is warm, turn off the engine. Checking the oil while the engine is running will result in an incorrect oil level reading.

3. Wait at least five minutes (but not more than 10 minutes) to allow oil to drain and settle in the engine.

4. Remove the dipstick from the external engine oil tank and clean it with a lint-free paper towel or a cloth. Re-insert the dipstick into the external oil tank,

pushing it all the way in until it stops.

5. Remove the dipstick from the oil tank and read the level on the cross-hatched area. Oil levels that fall in the cross-hatched area are normal.

Well done Kevin. I just wanted to add that there are a couple of good Youtube videos if you like that kind of thing. But I follow the steps Kevin listed to the T. I too like the car to sit level for a while so all the oil drains out.

I like to fill my oil filter with oil before putting it on the car. Less oil loss to bearings on the start-up following the oil change.

Wet sump system... just like anything else. And, put in a jug of the GM fuel additive, too. Can't hurt.
