Default What Challenges Do You Face When Driving Your Vette On Overnight Trips?

What kinds of problems and unpleasant situations do you encounter when taking your vette on overnight trips and how do you deal with them?

I usually go "overnight" in my Vette for two to four weeks at a time. It's a convertible. In 22,000 miles most all of it is road trip miles. I haven't encountered any issues at all.

I have not taken my Corvette on an overnight trip yet but if I had to park in a hotel parking lot overnight I would worry about vandalism.

Finding a good restaurant.

I have more than 700,000 miles in Corvettes in 45 of the lower 48 states - over the past 30 years... in addition I have more than 300,000 miles in Porsches, 40,000 miles in a Ferrari, more miles still in MBs, BMWs, Audis, etc....

Relax....... it's just a car.

And if something bad should befall, you do have insurance and credit cards, don't you?

I've never had a problem in all those years and all those miles.... all over the world - five continents.

Where to eat, what to do when i get where i'm going, whether or not i take enough pairs of boxers and socks to last me 3 times as long as ill be gone........the car is the least of my concern as its insured and they make new ones daily.

Its a Corvette. Not a kidney in a cooler. You'll be fine.

I've got more road trips in Corvettes than I can count, some with Mr.owc6, but even more solo.

I don't really take any extra precautions in it than I do with any other vehicle.

Pick your hotel wisely. It doesn't have to be the highest end hotel, but the lot must be well-lit. If it's a motel, make sure you can park in front of your room, but wherever you stay, make sure your spot is well lit. Frankly, I like staying in a hotel near the airports; usually it's a safe area, and not near any bad neighborhoods, but along the highway/freeway is fine, too, for the same reason.

When parking, make sure there is nothing visible in the car. That means pull everything out (and bring it in with you or put it in the trunk), but don't leave anything in the trunk you can't afford to lose. No RDs, no phone chargers, no sunglasses, no water bottles, no maps should be visible. It should be as emptier than it was on the showroom floor, and the power outlet and cup holder should be closed, and suction cup marks cleaned off the windshield. There should be nothing in the cargo area of a coupe, and I would consider taking the cargo shade down (depending on tint level) so it it obvious that there is NOTHING in the car. Nothing to temp a smash- and grab minded thief.

Then, enjoy the trip. If you worry overmuch, then maybe a road trip is not for you, and wouldn't be fun anyway.

I lay claymores around the perimeter along with razor wire. I then stay up all night, camped out at my hotel room's window with an RPG and .50 Barrett just waiting for someone to make my day.

(or maybe I just do what owc6 does in Post #9)

If you can not take overnight trips in your Corvette without worrying about the what ifs and fully enjoying the trip then I would leave it home and drive another vehicle.

I just pick the hotel wisely, well lit parking lot is a must, and as close to my window/door as possible. Also agree to take anything visibly of value out of the car.

The challenges that come to mind in your C7 on overnight travel to me, are; 1) vandalism, 2) theft, 3) road hazard damages of all kinds, and weather related damage. Other possible issues are not necessarily looming as large. That said, I would prefer to travel cross-country in my Class C RV, but that's mostly related in terms of length of time in weeks away from homebase. The comfort and convenience of your own RV domicile on the road for a period of weeks is unmatched by costly,
and cr@ppy motels.

One time while out of town with my GS, I walked out in the morning where it was covered with dew, to find a guy wiping my car down with an old chamois. He had an older Corvette parked next to me and was trying to be nice. He had no idea that I had spent hours with a polisher removing swirl marks, and now he is adding them all back since the car was dirty from driving all day the previous day. I was nice and said thanks and talked about cars for a bit.

No problems. I just try to (re) park my car in the same lot that my hotel room window faces if possible.

Having made many many road trips in all of my last 3 Corvettes I can say for one, I try to park where I can see my car when I'm in a motel and if possible in a spot that leaves it at least a little protected. Actually the main issues usually are weather ( which pouring rain is the worst), traffic and road construction ( that you aren't aware of until you get into it),moronic and careless drivers weaving back and forth and on your *** and finally wishing my wife would once in a while drive. But, all these things hold true even if I were driving our SUV . One thing I'll say is the weather mode on the C7 is great in pouring rain. Don't know how it works but it's a relief compared to my C5 and C6. Just have to be careful. I love taking the Vette on long trips . Just saying.

When I bought my z-51 in 2014 I picked it up near KC and home was at that time the Seattle area .I had to drive the southern route due to cold weather in the Rockies !!! My thought was to not prearrange lodging so what I did was to arrive late at the hotel/motel late in the evening in the 9pm - 12am and to leave early the next day !!!! I have bought 3 vehicles using this philosophy and no problems with vandalism !!!! Wayne

I worry about deer all of the time. Well over 50,000 deer are killed on roads in Pennsylvania every year.
