Default OEM cast vs Flow Forged wheels

Apologies up front if this has been covered already in another thread. The search feature is very cumbersome. With that said, I'm looking to purchase a set of Flow Forged wheels and want to know if any of you have tracked said wheel. Secondly, is a flow forged wheel stronger than the cast OEM Grand sport wheels? If that's the case, wouldn't the flow forged where hold up better on the track? Thanks in advance!

Not sure if you read this yet but it does explain manufacturing method, strength, and load testing of cast, flow formed, and forged wheels.

Failure could occur in any wheel, just less likely in forged/flow formed wheels. The barrels of flow formed wheels is where the added strength is, bends and cracks should be much more rare compared to the OE GS wheels. The face of flow formed wheels are still cast and catastrophic failure can still occur under hard track stresses but are much more rare than fully cast wheels.

Word. Looking to keep the stock wheels for track use and run the rotary forged for daily driving or vice versa. I only plan on doing 2-3 track events a year.

This is what I'm doing. After two cracked rears I bought rotary forged in stock GS size. I'm going to use OEM fronts and go with 19x12 repro in the back. Much better tire choices that way too.

Luckily I haven't bent/cracked my OEMs so I'm hoping they hold up on the track. I try not to daily my GS as I have a pickup but man is the GS hard to walk by in the morning.

I have yet to hear of an OE GS wheel failing at the track although it might have happened. Of course not everyone posts to forums like this and tells us about track wheel failures. I slapped a set of AS3+ on flow formed wheels recently and plan on using the OE summer set when it gets warmer. I figure that on the winter roads the chances of cracking or bending is much less with the flow formed stronger barrels.

Virtually everything is better than OEM!!! While rotary forged isnt as strong as Forged wheels, its much better than OEM C7 wheels!!!

Depends which OEM C7 wheels you are talking about. R86 are rotary forged. See stamping and link.

One more time, and it’s been true for a very long time.

wheels have three attributes.

Strong, light, and inexpensive.

you get to pick 2, the other is inversely proportional...

My original post: Depends which OEM C7 wheels you are talking about. R86 are rotary forged. See stamping and link.
My point is that some factory GM wheels (did you see the GM trademark?) are pretty strong because they are rotary forged.

Absolutely it makes sense. I think what he is saying is you can't order your factory C7 with those wheels, but you can order them from GM and put them on your C7.

Well I guess you know about as much as Timmy because if that's what both of you mean, you're both dead wrong. You can order your C7 from the factory with those wheels. They are simply a $1995 option.
