Default Brakes squealing

2018 stingray, 7, 678 mi. I can’t get rid of the squeal in the front brakes. Only seems to do it when cold backing out of garage. Goes away after it’s washed, but comes right back. Just started a month ago, don’t hear it after it’s warm or going forwards. Any help would be great!

Have you tried bedding the pads?

I haven’t tried bedding yet, my thoughts were after 8,000 mi. They should be bedded? It just st started, doesn’t do it going forwards, or after being driven.

My brakes also squeal when I initially back out of the garage and that is the only time they do that. I am not concerned about it.

I think it's water that has dried on the rotors that goes away after use.

High performance brakes don't really get a good workout during daily street driving. Easiest and simplest thing to try to stop the squeal is to bed the pads.

Do you know the procedure?

I’m not worried about it, it’s just annoying.

Find a nice back road, accelerate to 40 MPH. Hit the brakes hard until you slow to 10 MPH. Do not completely stop. Repeat 3 times.

Accelerate to 30 MPH and hit the brakes moderately hard until you slow to 5 MPH but do not stop. Repeat twice then drive for 3 - 5 minutes while avoiding brake use(to cool things down).

As do mine when backing out of the garage, I now back the car in to the garage when I come home so that I can drive out forward.

As a next step after doing the above and it doesn't go away, remove the pads and apply some brake pad lube between the pad and the caliper.

Seems pretty common that the brakes squeal when backing up after sitting for a while. Mine started doing that at around 10,000 miles on a base car. No big deal.

My wife's car does this (not a C7). My theory is 99.9% of your braking is done going forward thus the leading edge of the pads wear more. When going into reverse the trailing edge now gets engaged and the tapered leading edge has a tiny gap. This gap allows the pads to vibrate which causes them to squeak. This is more noticeable when the pads are cold (first stop of the trip) or if rust is present on the rotors (due to washing, overnight moisture, etc).

Brake paste (not lube or grease) might help if my theory is correct.
Amazon Amazon
NOTE: this stuff goes between the pad and the piston ONLY, it is sticky and works like a shim to stop the pad from vibrating. You don't want to use it any place where the pad, clips, springs need to slide.

JHII, I guess that's possible but I don't know if the leading edge of the pad wears more than the trailing edge. Why has this never happened on any other car of mine? I wonder if the "reverse" squeal only happens on base cars and not on Z51 cars??? Since the pad/rotors are quite different between the two.

I wonder if its just a pad compound issue as it seems to vary so much from car-to-car. If its the first stop of the day (IE backing out of your driveway) I would almost put it down to moisture or temperature differences. Pretty much all my vehicles squeak after I wash them or after it rains. Could also be related to how hot the brakes where when the car was parked.

Another good question is how many brake squeaking issues are due to the condition of the retaining clips. The clips should stop the pads from vibrating (which leads to noise) while also letting them slide in and out of position easily.
