PS I know a little about that '71 Beetle; I bought a white one fr. PA years ago. If you get a chance, ask Gail if her's has a "shiftable" automatic.

BTW, Mike, thank you again for identifying early on my issue with my garage door randomly opening and closing, seemingly on it’s own volition.
Yup, turned out that what you experienced recently with your neighbor......actually happened to us out here 3,000 miles away!
While we were programming our garage door openers to the Homelink in our new 2019 Volvo XC 60 AWD SUV...... a neighbor was doing the exact same programming with his car. Hence, when he opened and closed his garage doors, our garage doors would pick up his programming operational demand and operate in unison with his as well.
Got everything recoded on our end, and all is now good. This conundrum went on for over 2 months, until I finally contacted you and you shared your experience.
