with the car up, large wooden blocks under the tire in case the jack gives out. think ive even seen a pic or two of some members here doing exactly that.
painful pics to see, hopefully repairs are smooth and easy.

I've always toss a piece of 2 X 4 between the jack body and scissors part, just in case the jack lets go. So far, haven't had to rely on it but sorry to hear of the OP's experience
Hope it's a smooth and easy repair

Ouch! That sucks Chip. I know there a lot of methods to help protect & secure the car once it's in the air, however I don't know if there is anything you can do to prevent the damage when the jack fails during the lift and after gravity takes over, wheel on or off.
I would think the jack is still under warranty, however I'm not sure what kind of liability Harbor Freight would have on such an accident. I'm sure there is a bunch of fine print language effectively stating to use at your own risk type of thing.
I also have two Harbor Freight/Pittsburgh brand floor jacks and now I'm spooked to use them.

That sucks and feel your pain! The same thing happen to me with my HF jack BUT it was me being complacent not making sure the jacking puck was secure in the frame! The puck slipped out, and car came down on the jack in the same place! I did $1300 dollars worth of damage! After repair, I ordered my Quick Jack 5000! LOL

I bought a low profile jack from Harbor Freight and I looked underneath for major suspension arms to jack up the car in front when I was installing my Scrape Armour One side at at time !!! I did it with my other cars when I was yearly taking off wheels and cleaning the inside of the wheels !!! It looks to me you jacked up car too close to the side of the vehicle !!!! Wayne

I was about to say the same thing. Looks like the correct position to me. I believe this particular HF jack is the longer reach model.

So here is the real Suck A** part of the whole thing...
This happened during a install/photo shoot for a brand new
product we are making, and were going to tease on the Forum tonight.
The only good news is that it is going to be a BARN BURNER (not the blind spot mirror)
Insurance and Est/ tomorrow...
