Corvette power-steering recall affects 27,000 cars
#41
Jeeeze.......I'm debating moving from my Mustang to a Corvette, but these reliability issues kill me.
The issues with Mustangs are worry enough.......but stuff like this is very worrisome.
But, I suppose extending the warranty is always the answer. You just have to do it.

I wouldn't worry about it, as Foosh said if your VIN# is included you will receive a letter from GM, actually most likely a couple. If you believe you are one of the un-lucky ones you might want to start doing research to find the best service dept in your area.

I'm ok with that anyway as the car is not hitting the streets until may 1st. Too much crap and potholes at the moment.

BTW my 2017 C7 built in May is not showing up as yet on the GM recall site, but the site notes that it may take several days for info to be uploaded, so I'll be checking back.
EDIT: I see from others' posts that the information apparently already has been uploaded, so I'm probably good but of course will recheck anyway on the belt/suspenders principle.

My 2017 Stingray had around 1500 miles on it when I lost my power steering and yes the light on the dash came on and warning of no power steering flashed on dash. I took it in to my dealership and they replaced the elec. power steering gear asm. and performed alignment. Now I have 6,000 plus and I've had no more problems with it. I just inserted my vin and it said no recalls, figure that out.

I work at a Chevy dealer. Yesterday, I spoke with the service manager about this issue. Ran my vin and no recall associated with it. He also said, they are the last to be informed! From what I've read, this affects cars built after July 27, 2016. My door sticker build date says 07/2016 so maybe I got in under the gun. For whatever reason, we'll read about it somewhere before dealers are notified. I'll keep on top of this and post what I find out.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering gear assembly, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed in late March 2019. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available. GM' number for this recall is N182182760.

The photo in post #27 pretty much answers your question.
I agree with others above and would probably not have this work done until/or if the issue occurs in fear of what other defects may appear as a result of such a substantial repair. Possible scuffed up seats/sill plates, scratched paint, electrical issues, alignment, suspension issues etc .to deal with after the fact.
Would basally be a roll of the dice as to the quality of the dealership/service dept and tech you happen to use.

That is always a good motivator. For failures that can cause crashes, injury, and death, the manufacturers pretty much come clean because they would fare badly in a lawsuit, especially if they were aware and did nothing. The bigger problems come when widespread failures due to manufacturing don't come with such exposure. A great example would be the millions of intake gaskets that failed on GM products due to incompatibility with DexDeath coolant. An eventual class action, but I paid for two such repairs. A good Corvette example would be the "warranty extension" notice that I received on the fuel tank/fuel pump leaks. My notice extended the warranty on this item for 10 years/120K IIRC. Why not just recall and fix? Because the repair is very labor intensive and GM no doubt knows the profile of the product use - just look at the number of 10-15 year old Vetts with diddly mileage. Many of these cars will age-out past that warranty before failing. For those who do use the cars for daily use, well they may need to use the extension and GM looks good for coming to the rescue for them. For people like me the warranty will be long-gone. I'm sure the beancounters did their analysis and going this route saved GM a lot of money at the expense of those like me that keep cars far longer than the average buyer. Further evidence that if manufacturers are not forced to do something (either by fear of lawsuits or regulation, don't count on it happening. That's why I bought an extended warranty.
For GM's part, my 2014 has been failure-free, though I did have the airbag/fuel filler recalls. No sweat on it if they pick up the tab!
