my first 3 oil changes were at 30%, give or take a little. My indicator flashed at me last week when it dropped to 7%. Last night I was at 5%. I have an oil change scheduled for Monday morning. If I hit ZERO % this weekend, will the car shut down and not run? sounds stupid I know, but it would be on par with my corvette experiences lately.

No, however I expect there will be annoying warnings displayed or flashing on your DIC.

You will be OK and the car will still run. As said, you will get reminders to change the oil on the DIC.

That's for sure. I just passed 5000 miles on my Toyota Tacoma and every start " SERVICE REQUIRED" alarm/lights on. And that wasn't even for an oil change as first oil change isn't required until 10,000 miles.

Previously, on Corvette Forum, I always changed the oil prior to the winter storage phase of Corvette heaven.

Then I found my oil life had dropped over 30% by spring, just sitting there!

WTF? Back to oil changes every 3000 miles...

I didn't change my oil last November, but waited until yesterday...so far no noted damage to the car.

Winter storage is yer problem! If it drives year round, you can get much more than 3000 miles before an oil change. Shoot, the oil life will go to 0% if you don't drive 1 mile if you store the car for 12 months.

Just reset the nannie yourself and go on. It can be reset at any time... no biggie.

just did this. I do my own oil changes. It started complaining at 7%. I don’t drive it much when it’s cold, so it sat for about a week. Went to run some errands and it changed to 0%. I changed the oil when I got back from errands. No problem!

How accurate is the display ? I just took delivery 2 days back and it was 99% on delivery and put 80 miles and its 98% now , is that accurate ? Does it fall more during hard driving , is it condition based or mileage based ?

Yes, and time and startups and idling and temperatures and tons of other factors. Miles and driving style are monitored too.

If the car is under warranty, do what it says. If the car is out of warranty, do what you want. It's not magic. It's just a meter. It's not like a gas gauge where if it gets to zero, you're pretty close to running out of fuel. You need not "watch it carefully" like you might watch a temperature reading. You could run the car at 0% for years if you wanted to. It's not particularly smart, but there is nothing preventing you from doing so.

The one beef I have with the new time based factor in the OLM is that it will never let you go one year between changes unless you don't drive it at all. As soon as you start putting miles on it, you will end up with the OLM signalling a change much earlier than a year. For people who were used to doing the oil change every fall with their C5 and C6s, you won't be able to do that anymore according to the OLM, it'll most likely end up signalling an oil change every 6-8 months instead. I do agree that you should do it at least every year while under warranty, but if the combination of time and driving means my OLM hits 0% after 8 months and only 4000 miles worth of driving, that sounds too soon IMO. Of course, like mschuyler just mentioned, you could do whatever you want and ignore it, but it still shows there is somewhat of a flaw in the new setup now. I'd rather have it continue to just count down based on miles, and then if you happen to hit the 12 month time period, then it goes down to 0% to remind you that the time factor is now up. It might freak a few people out, but then again this OLM is already freaking a lot of people out, especially new C7 owners who are bringing out their cars from winter storage right now and noticing their OLM has dropped 8% per month all winter.

Isn't it synthetic oil, therefore the oil indicator should be more lenient.

The OLM is an algorithm run by time, driving style, trip lengths, miles, and much more. It has no way to determine oil age/type or condition. It is, however assuming you are using Dexos oil that meets with your MY's requirements. Is it conservative? Probably, but as long as you are under warranty, then you should change when it tells you to. After your warranty is up, do whatever you please.
