Auto Owners Only - Are You Happy With the A8?

My previous response about being happy with A8 was not complete. I am happy with it in 'manu-matic' mode. It allows me to control the engine, shifts are very smooth, and it brings out the character in the car. It may not shift as quickly as the dual-clutch trannys, but the behavior is deterministic so you can easily learn how the transmission behaves and let the 'human brain computer' compensate.
In full automatic mode, I am not happy. AFM sucks. Let me repeat - AFM sucks (hello Chevy!!!). Constant shudder and vibrations, which all go away in manumatic mode. Also, the tranny always wants to be in 8th gear, so I am always fight against it for spirited driving.

It seems to me that one of the most common questions is from people considering the auto but wondering if others who have done so have any regrets. That's always met with opinions from the M7 drivers. So I thought it might be interesting to hear JUST from the automatic owners for a moment:
I made it public to keep the M7 guys from all voting!

If I was buying off the lot the first thing out of my mouth would be "does this particular car have the updated transmission fluid or not " ? Then i would go from there.

Many of my cars over the years have been manual transmissions and my other two cars at the time I purchased my Corvette were manuals. I debated with myself about getting an auto Corvette but I don’t regret my decision especially when I’m in heavy stop-and-go traffic. Besides, I was offered a deal on it that I couldn’t refuse...
I used to be one of those who said if it doesn’t have a third pedal then it’s no fun, or you are not really driving it, or you aren’t a man, or whatever. I doubt Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc., drivers feel that way. I’d say I’m in good company with them. In my growing maturity I find it completly ridiculous that someone would criticize someone else in their choice of transmission. Why should I care what someone else chooses?

Most always had manual Corvettes, but loving my A8 GS.

Over 40% either miss the manual, or, wish they had one.
.
Not exactly as you thought it would go.

What was said exactly was:
"Yes - I sometimes miss a manual, but very rarely in real life". Not sure you are looking at the same poll as the rest of us.

since i drive a 10 speed manual at work, its relaxing to get in my automatic for the ride home. though....i do often wish i did have a manual just to slip it out of gear quick and rev that sucker up. love that sound. but other than that, im happy with the automatic.

Ditto the above... The 8A in my Challenger (ZF8) is brilliant at the track... While the corvette's 8A leaves a LOT to be desired at the track..... So i shift it manually with paddles. On the street it does great and is buttery smooth and I really enjoy it. It's just it's track performance that I wish the programming was better.

Had a 06 auto and a 16 auto. The 16 auto was very fast shifting and very agreeable comparred to the 06. NOW I have a Mercedes AMG GTC with a dual clutch transmission. This dual clutch makes the 16 seem slow shifting. IT is Lightning fast......

My 2016 is the first Corvette I've owned with an automatic, (previously I had a 2000 and a 2007 that were both manuals). No regrets and I'm really enjoying the A8!

Why do some people turn these polls into "this is better than yours' attitudes? Who gives a Sh*t what you think is better, if your happy we are happy. For example, there was a new Vette owner the other day who was proud to show the new car, guess what, a member decided to show what he got and posted a picture of his car??? No wonder we all can't get along and we ALL have Corvettes! Geesh!

Although I have a manual C5Z that I have tracked for the last 14 years and a C4 LT4 manual for the street, I really like the A8 in the ZR1. I can simply paddle down to a lower gear and romp on it for quick acceleration and after 10 seconds it goes back into auto. The shifts are quick and very positive. It is not a DCT mind you but is still a lot faster than manual shifts unless you install a clutch pack. And even a clutch pack would require serious practice to get as quick as the A8.

There is a difference between missing a manual and regretting the purchase of an A8 though. Yes, I voted that I do miss the manual sometimes, but I still don't regret getting the A8 at all.
