Default Texas "Tail of the Dragon" and AS3+

We've driven the real "Tail" in TN several times and find it to be a fun ride, if there's no traffic and everyone keeps their enthusiasm under control.

In January we drove highway (County?) 170 from Big Bend National Park to Presidio, total distance about 60 miles. The map shows it as a slightly curvy road running along the Rio Grande, tour books refer to it as "scenic". The first 20 and last 20 miles meet those descriptions, but the middle 20 are a real Wowie.
Pavement is not super, but smooth enough to be ok. The fun comes from the elevation changes and curves; many of which are blind. You come over the crest of a hill and the road may go straight, or sharp left, or sharp right. Sometimes warning signs, sometimes not. The transitions from downhill to uphill are tight enough that they have scrape marks from other cars on the pavement, even in Sport our Z51 gently touched the bump stops a few times. I can't recall the speed limit but nobody seems to pay attention anyway. This is rural Texas...

Just like the Dragon, going off will ruin your day and a whole lot more. Here, most corners are not as tight so speeds are higher and you still need to stay in your lane.

We had the AS3+ runflats on our car, air temperature was about 60'F. Perhaps the stock PSS runflats would have had more grip, but the AS3+ had enough that the car never slid or showed any bad habits; any higher cornering speeds would have put us into that range where any mis-step would bring disaster.

Great car, great tires, great fun.

Sounds like another great stretch of road to explore some day.

Unfortunately, no.
I was too busy driving and my wife was hanging on for dear life. I'm proud that she didn't barf or even get queasy. She's a former stewardess with a cast iron stomach.
A PDR video would be the best way, showing the speeds and G's along the way.

Another great testimony to those AS3+ shoes! From what I’ve read, they have pretty much the same limits as the best summer tires from as recently as 10 years ago. I don’t know how they do it.

Thanks for bringing us along for the ride...

If you get a chance, check out the "Three Sisters" aka "Twisted Sisters" near Kerrville. Really fun run, especially if you go during the week and avoid all the bikers.

This is what I like to hear about those tires before I purchase them. Thanx.

Yep -- my stock PSS are getting a bit long in the tooth. I see AS3+ in my future as well. I am really following those things and I keep seeing more evidence that they are the PERFECT tires for a northeastern DD C7...

Big Bend is beautiful, especially this time of the year, did this in Mid February. Temps were in the mid 50's and sunny. There are some wide open roads out there. Love the drive!
