Black wheel scratches after tire dismount/mount
Any idea what could have caused these scratches after having a a wheel and tire dunked in a tank to find a leak and then new tire installed? The area damaged is 1.5" wide. It's like a strap did it, but no idea why it would have been used.

A pry bar used to dismount the tire. Something like this:

No normal process during changing tires should get close to this area of a rim. Does not matter the type of machine being used in this particular case, this was careless handling.

Probably as he slid the wheel and tire into the tank it scrapped the side.
As you know, as you dunk an inflated tire into a tub it can get away from you and float and hit the side.

That is a very strange mark and not one that would typically be caused by the mounting/dismounting of a tire on a wheel.

Go find the mechanic who did it and ask him to lend you one of his rims. Then give it back to him all scratched up. Very few people care about your car at these places. I’d find a better place, they are out there. Not limited to Chevy either. Careless people are the common denominator.

I just went through that same thing with America’s Tire. They had to install loaner wheels while they sent mine out to be fixed. Those high volume tire shop are pretty careless. When I go back for my free balance and rotation I’m going to have the manager inspect the wheels for damage before they do anything.

Agree with everyone else that this is a tire shop that either doesn't have the best touch-less mounting equipment for wide, low-profile tires/wheels, a tech is not competent, or is careless. The average chain tire shop often does not, and I would never go to one of them.
I've found that dealers who sell a large number of Corvettes have the best equipment and at least one or more techs who know how to use it. Another alternative is a shop that routinely deals with exotics and other high-end cars. Audi, BMW, MB, and Porsche dealers, etc., also invest in the best stuff.
I have two sets of tires mounted and dismounted, as well as two flats fixed/replaced at a large forum Chevy dealer with nary a blemish.

Discount tire has a touchless systems and they messed up my rims the last time I was there, so having a touchless is not a guarantee.

Just a thought but perhaps when installing the tire the bead of the tire was dragged across the painted surface and caused the scratching.

Smart man! I got lucky and one of my old employees use to work for six pint tire and he told me how careless they could be even with nice cars. I started taking pictures and videos every time thereafter. Saved my ***.

The large Chevy, BMW, Mercedes Dealer in town uses who I have used- the 12 bay Firestone Dealer. Of their ~20 techs only ~3 are allowed to do wide low profile tires; they don’t want your wheels marked any more than you.
Just visited the small Chevy dealer who did my Courtesy Delivery. Great C7 tech, only one that touches Vettes. Was talking with the Service Manager and he said he sends all his Vette tires to a shop in town that does low profile wide tires all the time. Takes too much time for the C7 tech to make commission! Commission by beating allotted time is the way a good mechanic makes money!

Not only need a touchless tire machine but also someone skilled at doing low profile wide tires- especially run flats.
