Default Manual 1st gear engagement

Overall i love the transmission and clutch in the 7M and i think its the one of the best i have driven so far in terms of what comes from the factory but i do have trouble engaging to 1st gear occasionally , first of all you need to shift all the way to the left which is kind of odd and sometimes it gets stuck and i need to push it back to neutral and try again, 60-70% of the time its smooth but rest of the time its notchy . Rest of the gears are silk smooth

Do you manual owners face the same issue and is there any trick?

Car is brand new and is close to 500 miles.

Maybe give it a bit longer to break in more, and give you more time to learn the little ticks of the tranny. Hopefully it will smooth out. I haven't read of this particular problem for the M7 owners here.

Disclaimer: Mine is the A8. Hopefully someone will come along with more info than I can give.

1st and 2nd gear is known to be clunky and not smooth. 3 - 7 is butter smooth but 1 and 2 can feel crunchy sometimes. From what I have read, it's normal. Some guys have swapped out fluids and claim it helped, but I only have 5k miles on mine so for now its fine.

I have not experienced that problem with my M7, second gear can be a bit clunky when cold but never an issue engaging any gear.

Yep I have this issue with my 2014 Z51 M7. I've got like 25K in mileage now, but did a transmission fluid change at 22K that helped.
Here is a post where someone reported the same problem:

Good to know! I just got my GS and experiencing the same issue, I simply thought it to be needing break-in. Might as well get a short-throw shifter while we're at it!

My issue Is not that bad..happens occasionally from neutral to 1st only, never happens from 2nd to 1st . Was trying something different that with clutch full down it seems the movement is better, maybe not felt like that.

Is that a aftermarket short shifter ? Why would dealer throw in that ?

I am very happy with the stock shifter and think its fantastic, maybe will change to a weighted **** in future otherwise shifter is just fine.

I have the same experience. This is the best manual I've ever owned.

4400 miles on my M7.. 1st and 2nd are sometimes a drag WHEN the transmission isnt warmed up yet.

i switched the fluid to Redline D4 (yes itll usually say "automatic" trans fluid on the bottle, but read the rest of the label) and it was noticably better. bottom line, the factory fill fluid isnt that great.

when the transmission isnt warmed up yet, you gotta baby it a little. if youre not gonna baby it, then you have to just shove it into gear. there were a couple times when i shift, let the clutch out then hear a momentary grinding because my dumb *** didnt actually push it all the way into gear. double clutching while at a complete stop, mostly just for when you first start the car up, sometimes helped also. but yeah, get some Redline D4.

They wouldn't wouldn't unless you give them one to put in.

You asked how to improve the "gate" in First gear, so I answered your question

A shifter alignment and short shifter will fix your problem.

I have a 2014 M7. I just changed the factory fluid with Redline D4 ATF and it made a big difference. Shifting into 1st is noticeably smoother now. My 1st gear loves it if I engage 4th then 1st at a traffic light. It's a force of habit now..even after the synthetic swap. 4th to 1st is like butter.

Wouldn't the short shifter make it more notichier as I think the problem is fitting 7 Spd manual transmission in that gated space, I understand short shifter will make the throws more crispier and short , actually I like this stock shifter a lot.

Just put your back into it - I haven't had any issues, I just aim and push, the transmission feels just like the one I had in my '01 Trans Am (although that was made by a different company).

Ah yes. I have that little issue when cold too. You think you are in first, but then hear the grinding when letting clutch out. Almost like it is slipping out of gear, but it never went into gear. I pay more attention when cold. No problem.

Try hitting 2nd or 3rd and just let out the clutch and feel when it grabs, then try 1st. It should go right in.

I am close to 1k miles and dont see much improvement in 1st gear and was hoping it would be smoother when car breaks in.
Any idea how long it would take to smoothen out?
