Key fob in pocket keeps popping the rear hatch!
#21
Advanced
I've had the hatch accidently open numerous times in the 4 months I've owned the car. Usually happens with the fob in my front jean pocket when I lean against something or crouch or bend over while working on the car. The other day I set off the panic alarm and popped the hatch while I was up on a ladder painting the garage.
Actually I don't need to use any of the buttons on the fob...……..I might just use a "post-it" and disable all the buttons.

I had the same problem on our 2006, bought one of these and cut a thin-but stiff piece of plastic to fit inside the front and protect the buttons. Then I punched small holes over the buttons so I could activate them with a ballpoint pen. No problems in the last 13 years/150k miles on C6 & C7.
This inexpensive silicone key FOB cover holds the metal key in, it can't come out unless you remove the top of the cover.
Put the same one on my Grand Sport key FOB.
They come in colors for his and her's (sorry to be PC it and it!)

I bought the same silicon FOB cover for my 2014 C7 for another reason altogether. My metal key came out and the FOB stayed in my pocket. Then a poster said they found their metal key, other keys on a ring and LOST their FOB. Never found it and had to buy a new one!

I forgot to mention that the key in our 2009 fob started coming loose by itself, so I used the fob jacket to keep it in place like you did. Eventually I discovered that our GM extended warranty would pay for a new fob to fix the problem, but I never would have paid for a new fob out of my own money.

Cadillac apparently has an identical fob. So they have a leather slip on cover sold on ebay that you can push the buttons through the leather. But the leather covering desensitizes the buttons from accidental pushing. And the leather cover keeps the fob in perfect condition. $6.98 ea. better leather than my c7 seats, ha ha.

This thread just hexed me.
I have never had this happen in my prior 2007 z06 or current 2014 stingray. But guess what ?? After reading this post me and the wife took the vette out to lunch today and the first thing I did is pop the rear hatch when getting in the car lol. I had some other crap in the same pocket with the FOB. I had a pretty good laugh with the wife. Thanks guys

If you put the fob in your pocket w/ buttons facing toward you with nothing (keys, coins, etc...) between you and fob, this will never happen again.

True, but I carry enough stuff in that pocket that gets removed and replaced throughout the day that trying to keep it organized became annoying.
For me, it was easier to protect the buttons and not have to deal with it.
Other people, other pockets; maybe different.

Gotcha!
Me, on the rare occasions that I have to carry a fob on my person, I just tuck it into my bra w/ the buttons facing inward. Probably not applicable for the vast majority, here.

The cause of popping the rear hatch is my fault. I have too many keys on my key ring that I cram in my pocket but it seems to happen even when I don't place them in my pocket. I don't think I've hit the dash button accidentally with my knee. I may try the Post It note trick and simply use the dash button when needed. Thanks for the input and responses.

If you are that far away from the car, it doesn't seem like the fob could be it.
I've never once pressed the trunk button on the fob by accident, but I've bumped it open with my knee once.
I don't do key rings and a bunch of other hard stuff in the pocket with the fob though.
If you are pressing it so often that it is happening frequently while just walking to or from the car while you are in range that it will work, it would seem like the fob battery would be dead in short order from the constant active transmitting.

"Pictures, or it didn't happen!"
My wife carries her Fitbit in your same location. I have changed the first letter of its name from "F" to "T".
I don't have pictures of that either, but I still have the black eye from trying...

Since I didn’t want the strap anyway, I just cut it to remove. The leather is nice and thin, and after a couple of weeks still snug enough to hold the fob in place. I’m happy, but have different ways from rckt on how I want to use it.
This fob cover is a bit thinner and much less "grabby" than the rubber Fob Jacket one I had been using for years. We'll haver to see how this one holds up over time.

The fob has buttons? I just put it in my pocket and forget about it...
