Default One major C7 irritation, please help

I love my ZR1. With a few ergonomic exceptions. Chief among them is the auto headlight "feature" that seeks to suddenly blind me to my instrumentation and forward cameras when I enter my garage wearing sunglasses. I want to turn this stupid feature off. And I have - many times! At least the car tells me that I have. But I haven't, because it keeps turning the lights on without my consent, even on the same drive (no power cycle) after I get the notification that the system is turned off. Someone tell me there is a way to defeat this stupid nanny!

No way to defeat. It has to do with it sensing day or night. It will dim the dash, regardless.

-That makes no sense. Then why is there a switch on the stalk to disable auto headlights?

if the lights are on you can turn them off.. when the sun comes up it turns itself off and resets waiting for the sun to go down to turn back on... > or pull into the garage... its a safety thing, just think someone turns it off and then drives into a tunnel and can not see and they kill someone because the lights were turned off....

Excellent question.

On my BMW, and many other cars, you can disable automatic headlights, as well as turn the lights on or at at your discretion. The lights remain off even between starting cycles if this is your choice.

I share your frustration as I use the camera parking in my garage and the auto on feature renders the camera nearly useless.

Why blame the C7? It's the dark garage that is the problem. Install bright lights in the garage that turn on with the garage door opening, the C7 would then not sense a dark cavern and should not activate her headlights.

NOT helping the specific issue BUT I have had these installed on my Vettes and Wife's cars for 20 years and they still work great! Much more accurate that the front camera.

In fact, the wife has our old refrigerator in front of her car and she needs to keep space available so she can open the door. You can literally park the car within 1 inch of where desired! Have both cars set for the Laser light to be in the center of the dash when parked at the right distance. Cheap and much better that a tennis ball etc!

I have the exact opposite issue. I don't need to use the cams to park, all I need to do is watch my side clearance as I have other cues as to how far to drive forwards. My issue: I start the car in the garage and the system turns on the headlights and dims the display. And it is slow to adjust to the daylight so I can't really see what's behind me when I back out into the daylight. I have a large tree in front that makes the system take even more time to switch over. It is a real PITA. I would also love to just turn it off. Maybe turning off auto headlights will do the trick? The key part is the dimming of the display. Not sure if auto headlights selection will change that.

So if the switch is there, why don't you use it?

I just tested this. There really is no OFF position for the feature. You can turn it to a momentary off position that does turn the headlights off. But the screen remains dim.... which is terrible when you are backing out into the bright. I usually have to back out part way then stop for a few seconds to allow it to switch before backing into the street, lest I'd be flying blind.

Yes, I hate this feature too with no option like every other vehicle I've ever seen to operate headlights/interior dimming in fully manual mode. I have to frequently remove my sunglasses because I can't see either screen well when they dim.

Must say it's never been a problem for me with a C6, my '14 and now '19.

(then again, I open the garage door before I fire the car up and maybe enough light gets in....)

I just accepted it as a the C7 having been programmed by techs that gave the C7 a mind of it's own. I'm just an owner.

I think if you pull out so the car is in direct sunlight you'd be OK. It would switch pretty quickly. I pull out with the car in shade which slows the switch. But the sidewalk and road at the end of my short driveway are in direct sun. It's like a tunnel. So I have to wait a bit for it to switch. How they programmed it makes sense on the surface but they obviously didn't beta test various use scenarios... or didn't care. Seems providing a manual mode would have been a no brainer. This pisses me off every single time I depart. I mostly forget about it by second gear. Mostly.

I suppose it depends upon where you are. In an area where there are a lot of tall trees and with low sun angles during morning and evening commutes, on roads with big trees on each side, the headlights frequently come on and instrument lights dim. It happens to me about 7-8 times on each leg of my commute.

It's one of many examples of YMMV and one size doesn't fit all. That's why the best solution would be a manual selection for the headlight switch. The C7 is the only vehicle I've ever seen without that. If you're one of the unlucky for which it is a nuisance, it would bother you.

Never had to do that. Just opening the garage door has always been enough for my situation

And in my area, the jerks driving those cars are always running around with their lights off at Twilight or after the sun goes down. They can see but don't seem to realize nobody can see them unless their car's body blocks the lights from some other car. Dangerous as hell.
