Default C7 depreciation

Hello!

Been wanting to buy my first corvette for months. Finally found exactly what I wanted, only to get orders to deploy out of the country for six months. So I’m wondering if I should buy the C7 I like now and leave it parked or wait until I return assuming the C7s will depreciate more quickly now that the C8 is coming out.

In short, do you think C7s will lose significantly more value in the coming months or will they depreciate about the same/normal rate?

Sometimes it can be hard to find the exact one you want. Me personally I'd buy it now and have it to enjoy once I return.

And btw... Welcome to the CF.

It depends on how much money means to you. If you are one that it's all about how cheap you can get something then wait. It getting what you want and enjoying it more is most important then purchase the C7 that's just what you want before someone else does.

And thanks for your service to our country.

You should be able to get it cheaper by waiting, but unlikely that much lower than current discounts which are substantial. Right now you should be able to get 16% off. By waiting until after you deploy, you might find a few extra percent on loss leaders that dealers are trying to move. But if you can find what you want now, 6 months parked in your garage is better than buying one off the lot 6 months from now that has been sitting outside exposed to the elements on a dealer lot.

For me--not you or anyone else--getting the exact correct car I want is more important than bucks. And, I don't get rid of what I like; for example I still have my C5 which I ordered in early '01... soooo, if I found what I wanted now, I'd buy, otherwise not. Hence, you need to have a talk with yourself, imho, as to what is most important to YOU, choice, bucks, or... whatever. All the best on your deployment.

If ya found the exact one you want, I’d get it now. Who knows how difficult it’ll be to find the same exact one when ya get home. Either way, have a safe deployment and good luck!

I have looked for months without finding what I want...main issue is I would prefer a manual transmission, GS with 2LT package...preferably in a particular color combination. I’m surprised it’s taken this long to find it.

I figure if I’ll save $1 or $2K, might as well buy it now. But if it’s projected to depreciate more rapidly due to the C8’s arrival, I’d wait. I mean, it’d be nice to have an extra $4 or $5k to spend on track days and tires.

New or used? If new, het it now as finding what you want this winter likely won’t exist. If used, wait...there are literally 1000s out there.

Like you said you looked for months without finding what you wanted, wait six more months and it will be even harder if not impossible. Manuals are difficult to find period, because most dealers don't purchase them for inventory, only special orders.
Can be very difficult to find a manual in a particular color combo with all the features you want. I looked for months trying to find a silver/red 1LT manual GS vert when I bought mine. Settled for an A8, now glad I did as I really it.

When the c7 came out would have loved for a c6 gs to drop like a rock in value. It did not. 6 years after the last one rolled off the line, a nice one still goes for high 30s low 40s. IOW, it competes with 2014 c7s.

If you have found a exact match used at what you would have ordered new, at a price you like and the cars condition is perfect, what do you expect to gain by waiting? A $19,999 c7 2lt in perfect condition? Yeah, right. What can you lose? The exact match of your dreams in perfect condition with no more chances to order one new.

If money is the issue wait, if finding and getting exactly what you want is the issue then buy now.

Personally I wouldn’t spend Corvette money to leave it sitting for 6 months. Out your money in a good mutual fund and make 5-5% on it, then when you’re back buy the car.

My take is that the real challenge is finding exactly the car you want if not ordering...6 months of depreciation (if that can even be measured) is small to non-existent.

Finding the exact car you want without ordering would far outweigh any potential depreciation reduction later on IMO...

I say BUY IT!!

Ken

I bought a car about a month before deployment... I came back to it totaled (let someone else drive it).
Cost wise, you also have 6 months of insurance that you could (and should) save yourself.
On top of that, youll have 6 months worth of payments saved up...
Plus, sitting, youll come back to flat spots on tires, and a dead battery... (saw HUNDREDS of them when i came back).
Plus "bad" gas at 6 months..

Obviously you dont have to listen to me... Those are my experiences...

Given that you're waiting due to military service, I'd wait. There will be plenty of used C7s when you return. To fine the one you want, you may have to look several hundred miles from home. Still, I'd wait.

Copy. That’s why I asked for advice.

The tire, battery, and driving issues can be addressed. I have a large garage and trust my wife. Also, I think USAA offers a pretty decent deal on “storage” insurance.

Good things to consider, though. Thanks!

My monthly payments will be about $1K per month. If I threw $1K every month into an account earning 5% per year, I wouldn’t even make $100 after 6 months. Now, if you know of a mutual fund making 5% per month, do let me know!!

Let me start with I’m not a financial advisor. However, I’m in some very good funds in fidelity and some stand alone stocks and ETFs. My car fund is up about 27% over the last month. I don’t mind telling what I’m invested in, however I’ll end this with I’m not a professional finance person so I take zero liability.
