Default 2016 C7 recent paint trouble

Recently pulled the car out to wash and detail after a trip to New Orleans. As I began to wash the bugs off of the front of the car, I noticed that what looked like the clear coat coming off. At first I figured "maybe" it was a clear protectant that the previous owner may have applied, however I was wrong. It was indeed the clear coat with the paint to follow. (Note: no pressure washer was used, merely the pressure of the water from the water deionizer.) The car was purchased as a CPO less than a year ago. I doubt the paint is covered under any kind of warranty. Has anyone else had this kind of issue with the paint on the 2016's? I've had so many issues with this vehicle in the 9 months that I've owned it, that I'm regretting my purchase entirely. First the A8 transmission shudders that still remain after 2 flushes, the entire dash had to be replaced due to crap leather, now, the paint. Pretty car, subpar craftsmanship.

I have seen this in my detailing shop and tell people they need to get the car back to the dealer for a repaint and pray the paint shop is better than the factory.

All I need is the bumper. Hopefully GM will cover some of the costs, but I'm not holding my breath.

That is terrible. Hopefully GM will help out on the cost of a repaint.

This is the first I've heard of the clear coat coming off. Hopefully the warranty covers that.

That's odd, I've never seen clear coat peel off like that.

CPO btb:

it says bumper right in the description, run to the dealer before the warranty expires. Good luck!

It is a very, very common for dealerships to refinish bumpers of cars they take on trade. Thereís no way itís peeling like that from the factory. Would I go throw a fit? Absolutely but theyíre most likely going to have the same guy who didnít prep it right the first time do it again
Iíve been painting cars a long time and I can tell you Iíve never seen something delaminate like that from the factory

Is the bumper in an accident and re-sprayed? A new bumper should not do that in such a short time.

Since you got the car used you probably don't know what it has been through prior to your purchase. I'm not convinced that's GM's doings... this time. Best of luck, however.

Unfortunately out of the bumper to bumper warranty. Im not 100% how a CPO works as far as warranty of paint (if it even does). I've owned the car 9 months.

No accidents via CarFax, however we all know that not all things get reported.

I'm with the crowd that says it has been repainted for one reason or another. But I have never heard of any factory paint job peeling away like that. I'll bet anything that had been resprayed. Poor prep, poor paint, or poor clear coat application.

Update: So I took the car into the dealer in hopes of finding out if GM would indeed cover it since it was a defect or had been painted by someone prior to my purchase (which was not disclosed in any form when purchasing). So the service guy who deals with vettes, took a look and stated he'd never seen anything like it before. Ok? I took the CPO paperwork and my purchase agreement with me and presented them to him. He also stated that it looked as if it had been repainted (poorly) at some point and just not reported. So I was directed to the off location body shop to have the service manager look it over. I drove over, he looked it over took some pics and stated that indeed, if the car was purchased as a CPO, regardless, it is covered. He stated what probably happened was that it may have had a few rock pecks and they had some mobile paint crew that comes through (those that literally mask the car off and paint the car in the parking lot) paint the front bumper. He stated that he would submit the pics to GM and if need be he'd contact the dealership where I purchased and have them reimburse if GM refused. Either way, he agreed, I should not have to come out of pocket for this. I have been quite fortunate with the service I've received with this car given the issues I've had in just 9 months. Stay Tuned

To the OP I would also recommend the Range device for your A8 if your still having the shudder problem. It has fixed everyone elses issues with the A8 and could give you peace of mind with that. Glad to hear GM will fix this for you.

The Range devise doesn't 'fix' an existing A8 shudder problem it keeps one from developing by not allowing the V4 mode to engage.
