Default Playing music through USB. What am I doing wrong?

I have made several music flash drives for my my other vehicles, but this damnable GM system has me perplexed. I make them all the same way (FAT32 MP3 ext), and all play in my other cars, but only one will play in the Vette. I bought a new SanDisk 3.0 version yesterday, made sure it was formatted correctly, synced the music, and the dang Vette system won't even recognize the thing is plugged in, in any port. And, yeppers, it plays in my other cars. Sadly, my previous '16's system was the same way, FUBARed. Any help for the technologically challenged would be appreciated.

I used iTunes to create playlists on my USB drive and it works perfectly in my '19

But I did find that the mp3's had to be in the root directory of the drive (and the playlist pointing to it) in order to work

Thanks Ken, if you have some time can you explain that to me?

Some of my usb's work in my 2014 stingray and some don't work very well (skips, etc,). All were music transferred from my MAC using iTunes.

Depends on the size of the flash drive. Is it over 32GB? Windows won't format FAT32 on >32GB USB devices. Rather, it uses exFAT, unless you choose NTFS. C7 infotainment won't read exFAT, so try NTFS or get a 3rd party format tool if you need FAT32 for cross-vehicle compatibility.

No need to place anything in the root directory, contrary to the other post. It will scan the whole drive (once it recognizes it).

It's a 32 gig RR. I try a reformat to NTFS. Thanks

In my case, my '19 would NOT recognize the mp3 files unless they were in the root directory (it is a 32 GB SanDisk low profile 2.0 USB, formatted FAT32)

As I store all my music files AND playlists in a directory on my main computer of C:\Stingray and then copy the directory over to the USB drive. It didn't work so I moved the files to the root and edited the playlist files to point to root instead of the original path and now they work fine

As it's 32 GB, FAT32 should be fine

Mine didn't like USB drives either. I used an 8GB disc, Transferred my music to that, popped it in the console slot and voila.......works great

If by disk, you mean SD card then that option was eliminated in later model years. USB is now the only option.

My problem is that only about half of my music on the USB drive is recognized even though they are all mp3 format. I've tried three different drives and all of the ports in the car but it just doesn't see all of the music.

I've got a Sandisk, and a PNY (both 32) w/NTSF ext loading right now. If that doesn't work, I'm gonna find some 8 gig drives, and try those. If that don't work, I may just give up. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Okie Dokie, as I said I loaded the 3.0 SanDisk, and the 2.0 PNY w/NTSF ext. The car still didn't see the 3.0 SanDisk. Then I loaded the old 2.0 PNY, and the system would only play one song. But, I think I found the secret to the whole deal. I thought why not ask the "lady in the radio". I pushed the voice button, and said "USB". The radio lady said something like "downloading music". I waited until she finished her work, then I ask her to play a certain song. Success.......................I wish I could explain it better, but as I said I'm technologically challenged, (re:old).

Careful...defaria will say you're full of it...

Seriously though, so using the MEDIA button didn't load the drive?

I didn't try the media button Ken, didn't even think too. I was just grasping at straws when I decided to ask the "lady in the radio" for help. And, I'm not even sure that formatting it with the NTFS ext. was the magic solution. It was one, or the other, and maybe even both that did the trick for me. I still don't understand why the thing didn't recognize the 3.0 SanDisk drive.

BTW, if anyone know about being full of it, defaria does.

You should press the MEDIA button to select anything connected to any of the USB ports (the car will scroll through any that are).

Sounds like you expected when you plugged the drive in, the car should have chosen it? If so, it doesn't, you have to select via the MEDIA button or use VR as you did

Ah, no I won't. I'll only say you're full of it when you are indeed full of it.

I often do know when other people are full of it!

I understand what you're saying now Ken. When I plugged the 3.0 in I did try the media button just to see what would happen. When I did the screen for pairing the phone popped up. That was strange. When I plugged in the old one the screen was already on the media page. It's a mystery to me why the 3.0 will work in my Jeep and the wife's car, but not the plastic car. But after all it is a GM product.

Let's get back to formatting that 3.0
  • Google and get 'guiformat'
  • Use guiformat to format your 3.0 to FAT32
  • Once complete, find your music directory on your PC/Apple/mac/laptop
  • Inside your music directory should be a list of all your artists directories
  • Grab all of those artist directories (ctrl+a - which selects all directories), copy (ctrl+c - which copies all the directories)
  • Go back to your USB drive, open it and paste your music directories (ctrl+v - which pastes the copied files to the USB drive)
All of your music should now be in the 'root' of the usb drive (meaning, when you dbl click on the USB drive, a list of all the artists directories should be there and nothing else. Now lets get back to the car.
  • Open the 'hidden compartment' behind the radio
  • There is a USB plug, use it
  • Go to your radio and select 'media'
  • Music should start playing and there are options available to browse
That should be about it. Keep in mind too that there have been updates to the Corvettes entertainment centers. You might want to go to the dealer, complain that your USB isn't working correctly and ask for a flash update to the latest version. GL
