Cupped Tires
I have a 2018 Grand Sport with almost 9000 miles. Been hearing a roar in the rear especially on the right side. Took it in to get the oil changed and asked them to look at the rear wheels. They did not take the tires off but told me that the tires are cupped. I looked at them but really could not tell if they were cupped or not. Has anyone experienced this also if so what did you do.
Thanks still have good tread on the tires but boy they are extra loud.

Cupped tires is usually a sign that you have a bad shock. The tire is bouncing up and down causing the cupping. I would get a second opinion.

The roar could be a bad hub bearing.
Things that can cause tire cupping
- bent rim
- bad alignment
- worn suspension parts
- tire imbalance or run out
- defective tire

I agree here, on the thought that “cupping” is referring to the tires wearing more on the inside and outside edges and less wear in the center.

Tire cupping is uneven wear at different points along a line around the circumference of the tire. It looks like smallish worn patches, not a complete wearing of a particular tread block like you see with an out of toe alignment. Think of a tire making intermittant contact with the pavement and wearing in that spot each time it hits.

knowing this I might suspect a suspension issue could cause this. Maybe a bad shock.

As a quick check that its the tire, just swap the wheels side to side and see what happens.

When I did my widebody mod, my left rear tire developed a “sawtooth” pattern on the inside edge that sounded like a 4x4 on Superswampers😖. I got a proper alignment and the swapped the wheels left/right and the sound moved. The tech said the noise will slowly fade away as the tire was going in a different direction. It’s still loud on the other side. I’m beginning to think it’s a bent wheel. Mine are aftermarket. They look prone to bending.
Keep us posted Cardinalman. I’m interested to know what you find out.

Cupping can usually be felt with the palm rubbed from front to rear and vice versa on the tire. If tire “cups seem to be round or oval on the tire it is usually a result of tire imbalance or bad shock or both. If the “cupping seems to be more elongated and is diagonal across the tire it is usually a toe out of spec in the alignment. The balance and / or alignment can be corrected, but neither correction will repair the irregular wear and annoying increase in noise from the tires. A trip to the tire shop is the only cure for the tire wear.
