Default Plastic Top

Picked up a 2017 GS. It only came with a plastic roof. Is this normal? or did I get screwed ? It's kinda clear, not really. Nothing substantial, just plastic. Isn't it supposed to come with a real solid roof panel?

The transparent roof was an option, replacing the solid roof.

One could also order two roofs, one regular and one transparent.

IMO it's a good thing. As Elk said, the standard roof was solid, with the transparent (blue tinted) roof being an option. The good news is that after the C7 went out of production the solid roofs are likely much more available and affordable than the transparent roof.
FWIW, many owners prefer the transparent top except during hot summer months (I keep in on year 'round and use a thin self adhesive dot matrix vinyl shade to keep the heat down), and there are dozens of threads on the care and feeding of the transparent top, as some tops in some years have been known to craze. The cause is generally laid at the feet of using ammonia based cleaners... Hard to be sure if that's the cause, but using GM's glass cleaning spray is cheap insurance.

You decided to purchase a C7, saw what you call a "plastic roof" and didn't bother to ask the owner this question?

If you don't like the one you got, check the "For Sale/Wanted" section here for a while and you'll see others for sale. ENJOY... no matter if your roof is "plastic" or carbon-fiber!

You could get a car one of three ways:

* solid roof only
* transparent roof only
* dual roofs (transparent and solid)

The solid roof was standard, the other two were extra cost options.

LEXAN is simply GE's name for polycarbonate plastic.

And within the solid roof category you have 3 different versions: 1) visible carbon fiber 2) carbon fiber with painted sides and 3) fully painted. Even if the targa top is fully painted it is carbon fiber underneath... just like the hood.

A clear roof HTC would not be on my list. The midday sun is not welcome even with a good AC. Now on my C5 you can replace the clear roof with the body color roof in the summer but not sure how they could do that on the HTC. With the ease of raising and lowering the HTC I think what they've done is perfect as is!

I am sure you will be able to sell the roof if you want a different one. I am debating if I want a transparent roof. My C6 had dual roofs and I used the transparent one. My C7 came with white/carbon fiber. Definitely like the looks of this one better.
