To get my knees low enough to not worry about hitting that button I must hook my shoe under the brake pedal.
That's a PITA and don't to that very often. I do have long legs.
Height may be a factor. I'm 6'3" so my seat is pretty far back, although I have an M7 so I keep the seat close enough where I have enough knee slack to operate the clutch effectively. I'm pretty much the only driver of the car so i don't use the memory seat or the easy exit functions are rarely even move the seat. I guess for owners with shorter legs who are closer to the lower dash area, this may be a problem, but if they program the easy exit function, the seat can move back and the steering wheel can move up to help them exit the car without knocking the trunk release with their knees.
Plus, after owning a few low profile sports cars over the years, I learned to sit inside the car first and then swing my legs in to help reduce wear on the outside side bolster and then reverse the process when exiting.
Why have a switch? We have a FOB with a switch and you can put the FOB where ever you want?
True dat, but the fob is usually in my pocket when I exit the car, and the button allows me to easily open the cargo lid to access the stuff I just put in there...
Old thread. New information.
Sandyeggo Designs has a nice product that moves the switch inward to prevent accidental operation.
Works with single or dual button setup.

Purchased and installed. This works great. Two minutes to install. No more accidental openings. Brilliant!
in my 2014 M7, i use that button all the time. I find it more convenient than the exterior one above the license plate. I have never hit it with my knee.
Some here indicate they hit the button with their foot.
I do not understand how this is possible. They must get in using a unique technique.
lol, just trying to picture that as well.
its great that bezel was made for folks, i think I remember a few making some other sort of things to keep from hitting it but that recessed one looks factory.
I dont recall it being an issue for me but I like things like this so still might buy it and install.

Thank you! I ordered one. I guess I have bony knees, but I've managed to bump mine open half a dozen times now and it's annoying. This simple recessed bezel should alleviate at least one of my first world problems!
