Default key fob programming issue

2017 z06 2 key fobs. 1 original to the car 2nd fob is a new oem gm fob with the key blank cut to the car which I confirmed opens the rear hatch.

when I try to program the new key the way I read the instructions is as follows
1. insert key into lock and turn 5 times in 5 seconds
2. insert fob buttons up into slot in the column and dash should read new fob detected

my issue is when I perform step 1 I get a dash reading that says "action required remote learn pending please wait
then at the bottom of the dash above the touring icon it says "dismiss"
within a 10-20 seconds the dash simply goes blank and nothing happens. if I go get the working fob the car will not start until I hold the start button for 20-30 seconds to clear the dash then it starts.

ideas as to what im doing wrong? i9m keeping the working fob away from the car as instructed in the programming thread. do I need it in the cupholder? im sure its me not the car thats doing something wrong and im loathe to pay the dealership 75$ plus tax to program a key .

Use the procedure in the Sticky Threads or in your owner's manual. You will need to use the LONG procedure (Programming without Two Recognized Transmitters) if you want your fobs to be #1 and #2 (doesn't matter for 1LT/Z trim without seat memory).

Use the procedure in Sticky Threads to prove that the system works before you try the reprogram.

Is your new fob the same part number as the old fob? 2014/5 fobs are different from 2016/9 fobs and are not interchangeable.

Timing for the key rotations is tricky - try slightly slower or faster...

The owner's manual says to start with fobs in the cup holder. I have added #3 to my previous 2014 and current 2019 using the procedure in the manual.

@RonC7 I tried the procedure to see that the system is working with the recognized fob and I get the same message. do I need to erase this message before starting? I see the dismiss icon but dont know how thats done other than holding the start button 20-30 seconds. retry and same thing shows up.

Press the center button (SEL) in the DIC steering wheel buttons under your right thumb to dismiss a message.

SEL : Press to open a menu or
select a menu item. Press and hold
to reset values on certain screens.

ok ill try that. I was concerned about the long procedure since I only have a single workin g fob. if I screw it up I wont be able to start the car. guess its time to see!

something else you mentioned about the food having different yrs to work. physically they look the same the decal on the fob has the same #5951 as the original fob but I int see any part # without opening the fob up which im reluctant to do.

looking at the instructions am I correct in that I have to make all the fobs unusable first then relearn them? thats the scary part !

If you don't want the new fob to trigger memory recall - use the short procedure. You can always use the memory button...

So if you want the practice and to prove the new fob - do the short procedure and if successful then do the long one.

I'm just glad you got it done.

I know how frustrating key fobs can be.

it was more fear then frustration. with only 1 working fob and having to basically disable it I was terrified I would screw up the procedure and then have no way to start the car. im computer deficient and illiterate! can barely work my iPhone 8 lol
thanks again.

I've seen it suggested on the Forum that the long procedure be done in a Chevy dealership parking lot, for just that reason.

I try to stay as far away from dealerships as I can. it really wasn't hard at all and the instructions are clear and precise. the forum thread I was using didn't tell me I had to wait 10 minutes between and when the screen went blank I assumed it was going to sleep. the directions posted here were much easier too use

Thanks, that's what they were typed to do. Use the KISS method to get it done correctly.

hello, I have the same problem here in France with my C7 of 2017, the message is always the same as yours at the beginning. Could you explain to me what you did to change this message and finish this long procedure? thank you!

I reprogrammed an old and bought new fob since one is lost Still haven't figured out where the cat hides her treasures - another forum discussion

biggest concern following the instructions - turn the key 5 times and the DIC shows ready and goes completely blank a few seconds later.
Concerned - seeing no activity or any lights. 10 minutes later DIC lights up and press start/stop button appears press that shows ready and again goes blank for another 10 minutes
repeat 3rd time and after the hit start/stop message appears hit stop/start the message insert remote #1 and then followed the remaining instructions..

I was expecting a 10 minute countdown visible or seeing a light flicker to show something was happening - nothing just a blank screen - that was scary........
