Does it do any harm to leave a key fob in the car all the time ? Does the key fob actively communicate with the car whenever in close proximity ? Any possible battery damage to key fob OR car ? Thanks Bob C
1) When you push a button on the FOB (distance from car does not matter).
2) When you are standing within 3' of the door (P or D) and then press the Door Pad to open the door. The car talks to the FOB and the FOB answers back.
3) When you are within 3' of the trunk/hatch and press the open button under the trunk lip to open the trunk/hatch. The car talks to the FOB and the FOB answers back.
4) When you are sitting in the car ready to start the engine and press "Start". The car talks to the FOB and the FOB answers back.
5) When you leave the FOB in the car after shutting the engine off and you have the triple beep warning set to sound, the car talks to the FOB and the FOB answers back.
6) When the car is set to "Autolock", the car will lock 5 seconds after the last door/hatch/trunk is closed. The FOB distance from the car does not matter UNLESS the FOB is in the car and is detected by the car.
Otherwise, your FOB does not communicate with the car and is listening for the car and using a fantastically minuscule amount of power to "look" for a signal from the car.
Do you mean when it is in the garage or "all the time"? As I understand it, the car will not lock with the FOB in the car, unless certain conditions are met in the set-up.

There is a setting that you can do to have the car get upset if there is a FOB in the car. It is a setting. You can have it so the car doesn't care if 10 FOBs are in the car. The FOB does not, on it's own, talk to the car. The car instigates the FOB to respond or you make the FOB talk to the car by pushing a button on the FOB. Is that what you are asking?
That's good to know since other manufactures say differently for theirs (e.g. Mercedes).
I've drained the battery a few times by forgetting to take it out of the cupholder in my MB. Checked one day and saw the lights were on auto and on so didn't do that again.,
