Default Engine overheating warning

I was out at track day yesterday and during my laps the Engine Overheated warning started flashing and it said to let the engine idle. Weird thing was my fuel temperature was hovering at the middle of the dial where it usually does. Anyone have any insight on this?

Do you have the A6? If so, you should be watching your tranny temp. That's the one that will slap you hard for a temp problem.

I haven’t driven mine long distances in hot weather nor have I tracked the car or been at all rough with it but the A6 transmission fluid temps have been pretty mild. Need to more closely check the numbers but it appears to run considerably cooler than my G8GT. Might the rear mounted transmission result in cooler temps than one mounted to the engine? Don

If you drive an A6 hard on the track you will get a hot tranny and it will go into "limp" mode (meaning you cannot control the shifts, it does it "automatically"). I ran two very short sessions in my wife's C7 Z51 A6 at our local track. 1st session was a warmup lap with 2 hot laps and a cool down - no issues. Waited 30 minutes and ran the 2nd session with a warmup lap and 3 hot laps and a cool down - on the 3rd hot lap the tranny went into limp mode. Ambient was 85 degrees or so, it was actually quite pleasant. Other than the tranny issue the car was great on the track, it felt very planted.

I had a C5 with a manual transmission give me a warning about a hot transmission while on the track, and not too long after, the differential seized.

Given that the C7 has had an issue with insufficient lube in the diff, I think I would check that as a possibility.

Why the heck start ANOTHER thread on the same topic in C7 General? You got the answers in here.

I thought I'd elaborate since he didnt give much detail in his question and he did have a typo too that he didn't fix even after it was pointed out (lol) - basically he tracked his A6 Z51 on a road course for a few hours, and even though his engine temperature appeared fine in the guage that's on the main screen in that the red needle was well below the red warning markers, his HUD display kept showing an Engine Overheated warning that got distracting for him and was worrying him that something may be wrong. Basically seems like his warning pop-up was inconsistent with his engine temperature guage. I wasn't with him on the track that day but he told me about it afterwards in person, so I'm just trying to elaborate a bit so his question is better understood. He isn't asking anything about transmission fluid.

It has been posted on here many times that tracking the A6 will overheat the transmission and you will go into limp mode until it cools down. The engine is fine, the tranny is cooking. He should set one of his gauges to monitor the tranny temp and he will see what is causing the overheating message.
