Default Those that have Nitto NT05R's - I have questions

For those of you who are running Nitto NT05R's, can you answer the following for me please?

1. What PSI do you run them at when you are racing?
2. How fast have you gone with them on?
3. Do you notice a lot of side to side sway at 120MPH+
4. If yes to number 3, is there anything you have done to reduce the sway?

On Saturday I installed a set of NT05R's on the rear in size 305/35/19 on 19" replica Z51 wheels. They were aired up to 31PSI each. I went out and did a couple races that night and at about over 100MPH the car had a lot of "sway" side to side. As the MPH increased, the sway increased. To the point that I had to let off at 125 so I didn't side swipe the car I was racing. This really concerns me since this is my first set of drag radials and I didn't know that radials tend to sway depending on brand, size, tire psi, etc.

Comment below. Thanks guys

Ant

I've been to 160 a several times on mine... No sway, shifting of weight to either side, nothing like that at all for me. I drive around on the street with them inflated to 28psi... Have had them as low as 24. I feel like they're very stable even cornering at moderately high speeds.

hmm. Well then I wonder what's going on with my setup. I had them road forced balanced when they were mounted. Though I don't know that balancing would affect sway. Maybe I need to get my alignment re-checked..

how many miles do you have on them, new tires can and will do that alot. if your over 500 miles or about 5 passes on them there is an issue with the side wall.

They were brand new just installed. Had maybe 20 miles on them when I did the run. So after I have some mileage on them then the swaying will get better?

I don't daily the C7 at all anymore so it's just my weekend warrior. I have these on a separate set of 19" replica's so I can swap over to my 20" super sports for regular driving. Yesterday I left them on for a ride about 80 miles round trip to get some use on them so that was probably a good thing. Have not done any burnouts on them yet. I'll have to give that a go.

Sounds like an alignment issue to me. Have you had that checked?

I had it check when I got my front passenger tire replaced due to a blow out. Though, I suspect it was checked by a lower level tech that had no business working on my car. The alignment is fairly straight though, but my steering wheel is a pinch off to the left.

I say no on this more than not it is the NEW do a few burn outs with them. But still it may be the side wall on the street with the road not being like truly flat & getting into a dip in the road & then coming out of it.

Could be. I don't drag, but when road racing and the back gets progressively squirmy at higher speeds, I think about toe or caster off in adjustment.

You are a base coupe right? Have you added sway bars? If not the people responding might be in z51 equipped and comparing apples to oranges. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I'd say you need a accurate 4 wheel alignment done by a professional shop. I used to run the highways of TX in Black Bullet on bias-ply slicks and skinnys up front and felt like I still had control in a straight line when racing into triple digits, so no way those NT05Rs should scare you with nasty sway unless something is not right. I'd start with alignment issue.

Both these vettes had professional alignments done.

Camera car Silver Bullet was on NT05R 19" drag radials
Black Bullet was on Hoosier bias-ply 17" slicks, we also had a set of NT05R 19" drag radials for this car for daily driving.

I can tell you this 100% with the 15,s on the rear DR M&H tires on the highway at over 90 plus mph. If the road was bad are had dips in it my c5 was from side to side bad. I then could chg out those & put my street reg front & rears on the same car & could do 155 mph and it would be like glue to the road..

Ant,

Did you happen to weigh the 19" replica z51 wheel (with or w.o. the tire)? I am looking for a replacement to my 20" z51 setup with 285 Toyo R888's. Each wheel/tire weighs in at 58 lbs and its killing my top end.

For comparison I weighed my 18x10.5" C6 z06 replica wheels (56mm offset) with 305 MT ET Street Radials. They only weighed in at 50.4 lbs each, but the offsets are no good for the C7. They stick out over 1" on each side.

If the road is really good and flat that is no dips r rolls in it. If the car is doing this then YES it will need to go to a good alignment shop. Ant all shop are not the same just like tuners.

A number of years ago I had a 735 BMW I put a new set of tires on it had it align by a so called good shop that is all this shop did. But I guess didn't know how to do a 735. I went on vacation drove the car one way from Tenn to Fla. The front tires was over r about 1/4 way shot when I got to fla I drove the car back took it back to that shop & the azz hole wouldn't do nothing about it.

I took it to a diff shop got it checked out I took the 1st shop to small claims court & got me 2 new tires.

Not quite. I have spent the last few weeks getting my car running right and havent had the slick back on since. The NT01's are different tires than the NT05R though so I dont know that those would be a direct comparison.
