Got a quote from a dealer mechanic friend of mine. If using new GM parts.. a manual 3.42 diff with install would come out to about $3300 installed. They will also have to use their dealer tool(forgot name) to reconfigure the ELSD with the calibration number for the new rear diff so it will operate as designed.

I just checked Summit Racing and Jeg's and neither of them list a C7 differential gear set. Jeremy at RPM Transmissions has price information - (800) 406-1109, x 201.

Jeremy is selling them for $850 I was quoted. And he said it takes about 15 hours of shop time total to install. So you can do you own math for an installed price, but $2500-$3000 is an expected range.

My mechanic said to me that there is A special tool.RPM does the differential with the ring and pinion. Supposedly RPM charges $3000-$4000.They then send it to the mechanic. The mechanic charges at least $2,000. My mechanic with the tune etc will be approximately $3,000 all together $6,000- $8,000.
I was shocked to hear that much to change the gears.

3-4K is for a built diff plus upgraded halfshafts, not a ring and pinion swap. what your mechanic charges for labor and tuning is a separate concern.

Try getting quote's from different mechanics. My shop is charging me $400. to remove the rear, and reinstall it. I got a quote from Rockland for $750 to swap the gears. They're the only other shop I know of that can swap the gears, besides RPM. I don't know if RPM will install the new gears in the stock rear. I'm using the stock rear, and Rockland is only 30 miles from me.

thrilled,

Your figures on cost to do this are way way, way off. Somebody is blowing smoke up your ***.

I dropped the car off at the shop Wednesday 3/6. Thursday they removed the rear, and I dropped it off at Rockland Standard Gear at 1:30pm the same day. They completed the gear change Friday the next day, and I picked it up at 2:00pm today, and dropped it off at the shop to reinstall. I'm hoping to get the car back Monday. Oh, did I mention Rockland has outstanding customer service. I also met a few of there Ace Technicians. Highly recommended. Gear swap totaled $750. just like they quoted.

I'm sure many of us will want to hear your impressions. Did you go 3.90 or 4.10, and do you have the Z51 with the ELSD?

I have 3.90s, and the Base model, non Z51 no ELSD.
