The shifter is spring loaded to go into the 3-4 gate. You need to maintain pressure to hit the 1-2 or 5-6 gate and add more pressure to get into 7-R gate. It takes a bit of practice shifting to hit the correct gear on upshifts or downshifts. CAGS does not affect the spring loading, but only locks out 2nd and 3rd gear.
