Maybe something stuck inside the cubby that is interfering?

Other than that, looks like you are headed to a dealer to have it fixed under warranty.

Nothing in the cubby and I will be fixing this one myself. If anyone has any info from alldata or a tsb or first hand experience that would be great. If not I will rip it apart this weekend when I have time. Until then no access to the cubby which is no big deal.

My guess is that something is binding in the mechanism (a small motor drives a worm-screw), and when it binds the motor current increases, which then trips a 'pinch-protection" circuit which then reverses the motor and moves the screen back down a bit. The motor is at the bottom, in the middle, and probably accessable once the center "stack" trim piece is removed. Maybe one of those blue cables, or the white flat ribbon cable is getting caught on something.

It was the blue cables. Mine didnt have them zip tied and it was allowing them to move in seperate directions.

Thanks for following up! So many people ask, fix, and never come back to share, so we don't find out the solution...

Was there a reason you did it yourself rather than taking it to the dealer? How invasive was it to get at?

The dealership could not figure my car out if they tried. Long story but it was a 1LT Stingray with an M7. Its now a widebody A6 3LT that communicates to a bcm that is from a different VIN than the car because GM wont give me a VCI to reflash with all the changes. So now I just subscribe to GDS2 and service programming thru GM Online and use a Drewtech cable.

As for how easy to get to the unit?? It was pretty easy. Just remove the bezel and then remove the infotainment housing. Maybe 15 minutes to get it out.

Edit: the pic that ersatz928 posted was very helpful. I could see the one blue cable was catching but seeing it ziptied made my decision very easy.

Can you explain a little further what GDS2 is and what a Drewtech cable is needed for?

I'm trying to figure out when a J2534 cable is required vs a normal CAN to ALDL adapter. It seems like to program a module you need J2534 but HPTuners doesn't include one (that I know of) so once you've broken the seed-key, do you need one?

Or does a J2534 just allow you to program without the seed/key being broken? I know it's some standardized way to reflash modules, but I'm not clear on what it does. If you want to reprogram the ABS module, for example, why doesn't GM just provide a flash update that works over CAN rather than requiring a pass-through adapter like this?

As you can see, I'm a noob. But I'm trying to learn! I want to get to where I can hack the body module, but I'm only about a day into my quest...

Edit:

"The SAE J2534-1 standard, or simply J2534, was developed to promote
interoperability among digital tool vendors through the use of the J2534
API, which outlines the recommended way for Microsoft Windows to communicate
with a vehicle. (You can purchase the J2534 API from the SAE at
http://standards.sae.org/j2534/1_200412/.) Prior to the adoption of the J2534
standard, each software vendor created its own proprietary hardware and
drivers for communicating with a vehicle in order to perform computerized
repairs. Because these proprietary tools weren’t always available to smaller
shops, the EPA mandated the adoption of the J2534 standard in 2004 to
allow independent shops access to the same specialized computer tools
used by dealerships. J2534 introduced a series of DLLs that map standard
API calls to instructions necessary to communicate with a vehicle, thereby
allowing multiple manufacturers to release software designed to work with
J2534-compatible hardware."

So I get what it's for, and I get what it does, but how is it different than a generic CAN/ALDL interface I wonder?

Drew Technologies is a company that works with many automotive manufacturers for the J2534 and the development of software and also developing interfaces to communicate and program vehicles. www.drewtech.com

GDS2 is just the software that GM uses to diagnose and repair the vehicle. You can scan modules, all systems, command configuration functions, etc. www.acdelcotds.com
