Default C7 Z06 track days fuel consumption

As said by many, I've searched the forum and don't find any info on this. I just returned from HOD track day at Auto Club Speedway - Roval. This was my first event like this in my own 2017 Z06 ( with CF Aero Pkg ). I had an assumption of what my fuel mileage might be and arrived with a near full tank. Boy was I wrong about how much fuel I was going to use. I did five track sessions at roughly 6 and 7 laps in each session. The track is 2.8 miles so I was going roughly 18 - 20 miles.... and using 10 gallons of 91 octane.... so for the day I was getting about 2 MPG. I don't care about the mileage, but was thinking in my planning that it would be better than that. I'm certainly glad fuel was available at the track otherwise my fun would have been cut short. The track has three straights that are 100 to 125MPH and also the banked front stretch where I was hitting 152 to 156MPH. It must really suck it up at high speed. Are other 2017 Z06s experiencing this consumption rate at track days? What are you getting, and for what type of related track driving?

Funny, we were just talking about how high the fuel consumption is with the LT1; I do have a '16 Z51, and he does have a '17 Camaro SS 1LE. The consumption was about 6 MPG. Compared to yours, though, it suddenly seems much better.

650hp is a lot of hp to make, and it takes a lot of fuel to make it!

I'm too lazy at the moment but if you plunk the numbers in here, you can see the rate at which it will burn fuel (I'll rough it out but no pen and paper handy so I could be wrong):

lbs/hr / 0.60 BSFC = 650
lbs/hr = 390
390 lbs = 61 gallons per hour at max output

That would require 50# injectors so sounds ballpark right, but someone should check my math.

Default Don't forget COT

Dave,
That makes sense. Not sure what the addded amount of fuel is for COT, but I am sure that makes an additional impact on high speed track fuel consumption as well. Does anyone know how much fuel is added for COT? When I was at Laguna Seca for an HDPE, I was averaging about 4 mpg in the intermediate group.

2 miles per gallon!?!?!?!?!?!?

Well.....I think you've got a real problem!!!

Or, your calculations are a little bit off.

The C7 Z06 IS a real gas hog on the track!!! But it's certainly not a 2 mpg hog unless the car has a bad problem or some really serious mods.

I've been getting 3.8 - 4.2 mpg at the track. When running Daytona we generally do 30 minute sessions. The track is 3.56 miles, and at slightly more than 2 minutes/lap I'll do 9 to 12 hot laps in a session, which with an out lap and cool down lap is usually 40 to 45 miles/session. I use around 10 to 12 gallons for a 30 minute session.

For THE BEST analysis of what our cars do on the track, take a look at Poor-sha's post about his 2015 and 2016 track sessions:

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...e-numbers.html

In there you can see that for 2016 he ran 4431 miles and used 1067 gallons - that's 4.16 mpg.

For 2015 and 2016 he had a total of 9042 miles and burned 2255 gals - for 4.0 mpg.

I'm not sure of how aggressively you drive, but Poor-sha is a SERIOUSLY aggressive driver with lap times that hardly anybody else here can come close to.

So...if you're only getting 2 mpg I think there's something seriously wrong with your car!!!

Just MHO - YMMV!!

.

Pretty impressive Daytona PDR video... was cool. Auto Club Speedway - Roval is quite a bit more road course and a lot less at high speed .. hammer down 156MPH is about Z06 max before backing down for turn #2. .... far more heavy braking and heavy acceleration at ACS. I'm assuming thus sucking up even more fuel for distance driven. I am jealous though... I'm a drag racer at heart and it's the speed and acceleration that gets me going.... I would love to drive that Daytona Course. You're lucky......

I get around 4 mpg running around VIR. That is less than the C6Z which got about 6 mpg. I usually fill up after two 20 minute sessions. After two sessions I have less than a 1/4 tank left.

I'm making about 650 at the engine with a Procharger and I hit the fuel low level light right at 50 miles of highway driving (25 mpg) + 1 hour of track driving going 8-9/10ths. So that's what, 12-13 gallons for 1 hour of track driving. About 35 laps at 1.7 mile laps. So 60 miles. 4.5-5 mpg.

Just check your last 25 miles average right when you get off your session (assuming you do 25+ miles), so you can leave the guessing game out of the picture : )

I'm seeing around 4 in my Z51 at NCM MSP 3.25 grand full config. Lots of real estate for accelerating north of 100 and topping 134 with street rubber. I do about 90 miles per tank using 93 octane.

I'm pretty consistent at 11 gallons per 30 minutes on track with 42 minutes being bingo fuel. You can't run it too low because the gauge is unreliable when low on track.

4 mpg in an HPDE at a road course where there is some slower traffic and some loping laps thrown in sounds about right. But getting in the 2s in a small run group at AutoClub I totally believe and that was my experience in a spec racing class with much less horsepower. Besides the 2 inside straights the banking from the start of the hot pits through turns 1 and 2 into Turn 3 sucks up the fuel. We had to account for nearly 50% higher fuel consumption at Auto Club over Buttonwillow, Thunderhill, or Infineon. I would have to think Daytona would have the same result.

Nope - around 4 mpg at Daytona in a 2016 M7 Z06. I can't see a Z06 getting 2 mpg anywhere without there being some problem with the car, unless you're running around at WOT in 2nd gear for extended periods of time.

Just MHO, YMMV!
