Warranty / DIY Oil-filter change
Hi,
I'm French and in France if you want to keep your warranty you have to do the oil change at the dealer.
Is it the case in the US ?
I trust myself much more than the shop mechanics and would prefer to do it myself.
The first 500 miles oil change was done at the dealer but I was not confident...
Thanks

Just keep your receipts and use GM dexos approved oil. Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic (until 0W40 becomes available)

Great guys, this is what I was planning to do
I just wanted to know what was the law around it. I figured out this was the case because there is no log book in either my 2017 GS or my 2018 Mustang GT.
In europe you have a dealer log book where they write every maintenance done to the car (during warranty period at least)
Thanks

Sounds like you don't have much choice there in regards to dealership service if it's required. Thankfully, we don't have that issue here...at least not yet. Maybe on a lease but I have never done that so not sure. We can keep a written record of it in our owner's manual or other location (I do) but I don't keep receipts. I have had a few issues with vehicles over the years that involved engine problems and I have never been asked if I ever changed the oil. Nowhere in the purchase contract you sign at the dealership or anywhere in the owners manual will you find a requirement that you must maintain receipts to prove that you serviced your vehicle. A receipt only shows you have made a purchase, that does not prove you actually used it. I know folks that keep receipts so when they sell the vehicle through a private sale, the new owner may be more convinced that regular service was maintained but that's up to the individual.

Ok, let's be clear. It's the law. Specifically The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) is a United States federal law (15 U.S.C. § 2301 et seq.).
It states that automobile manufacturers cannot deny a warranty claim because you used an equivilant replacement part, and further bars manufactures from REQUIRING you to have your vehicle serviced at a dealership to keep your vehicle warranty intact.

As far as receipts, I was surprised to find that my vehicle maintenance is reported to carfax if I use a different retailer to do the oil changes etc. Even noted rotation of tires. Seems like that would be even better than a envelope full of receipts since they are basically certifying that they actually did the maintenance. Not so sure if you do the work yourself.

The OP said he was French. His profile indicates he lives in Idaho. He was only saying what was required in France and asking about the USA.

Just be careful of carfax. I went in for a state inspection and emission's an wound up with a replaced radiator according to carfax and had to explain and show people the receipt that I did not go there for that.
Carfax is a scam anyway....but people believe it. My dad's old suv was in 3 accidents (not his fault) AND had frame damage, what did carfax say......NO ACCIDENTS. lol

The legal profession STILL loves real ol'-fashioned paperwork.

If you have an owners account on mychevrolet.com,I believe you can manually enter a service record.
I don't like paper,so I scan my docs so they won't get lost/destroyed.
