I think you might be surprised. All of these gears aren't necessary for drag racing... look at how many cars run 2 speed powerglides, and top fuel has no trans whatsoever.

His goal, I assume, is to use only 4 gears and eliminate one shift entirely.

I would definitely hang onto the old rear end for a possible return to stock for future sale!

You're exactly right Dave. My goal is to get to 4th and hang on!

I had the same question also a 2.73 is probably too tall for my measly 700rw

I swapped the 3.73 in 2 of my ctsv's to 3.23 and loved the taller gearing. Car would do 95'ish in 2nd gear!

I really really really hate the 4-5 shift at half mile events. I'd still love a way to just lock out 7th so i can get push hard right and up to hit 5th. I put the stock shifter in and that seemed to help. Nailing that sweet spot to 5th with the mgw was just too hard for me. The centering spring was too strong so i would always push too hard to the right and hit 7th. Must just be my massive arm muscles :p

Kenneth dude I feel your pain.

my car probably has 20 half mile passes on it and I bet I went from 4th to 7th on 10 of them. I’m sick of it. I’m not coming out of 4th come hell or high water.

I have also been considering changing from the 3.42 to 2.73.
I have made 5 passes at the mile (at this power level) and my car has to stay in 5th way too long (stock gearing 3.42).

With the 345/30/19 Toyo R888R along with the 2.73 rear end the car should run over 200 MPH at 6,800 rpm in fourth gear. (M7)

The best I have ran so far is 184.6 mph (mile) 157.1 (1/2) this is starting off in 2nd gear. Not making excuses here but there was a pretty good head wind and high DA.
I currently make 767 RWHP.

BTW I also hate the 4-5 shift and I have also went 4-7 a few times as well.

I was going to do the exact same thing with my m7, but the gears will be way too long, specially if your car is a z51 your 4th gear will never end, best gearing you can do for a half mile is a 3.10 but that not available yet.

Check this site and put your gears and tire diameter,

Good luck,

Good luck,
Based on what IS available currently, the 2.73 is the best gear to get for the races he does.

Should work out great with it. Plus if a little off on the gearing the next set of rear tires he can also go up are down with it. Robert

A drag car with a powerglide will usually have a stall speed of at least 4000 to get the car off the line with the higher first gear. A top fueler has a clutch with a number of stages to apply regulated pressure as it slips during the course of the run.

I have been contemplating a 3.42 swap also on my GS but do not want to give up the eLSD, or cooling etc. Any advice? Possibly a manual 3.42 Z06 swap? Still trying to research. I want to increase my 5th gear performance for 1/4 mile stuff

You don’t want 5th gear for 1/4 mile. You should be crossing in 4th..

No way I can get to the stripe with 4th gear. Shifting into 5th gear at 112mph and trapping 126.9. would need a 28" tire with 3.42 but would be able to cross at the top of 5th gear.

Are you in an auto? I trap 141 and cross the line in the quarter in 4th with a lil ways left to go in the gear.

You will need a turbo setup for this to work perfectly, because prochargers a rpm dependent, as soon as you shift the rpm will fall a sleep if its goes under 5400 or 5500, for a procharger setup you always want no lower than 5500 rpm to get all the work you want done
