Replacing steering rack without warranty, need help
Hey guys, recently my steering rack on my 14’ z51 ( no mag ride) went bad . Chevy confirmed I’d need to replace. They quoted me $3600 which is a little much. $2600 for the part , $1000 labor
i found a barely used rack with only 7000 miles from a 2014 stingray which is same year for a great deal .Will I have any issues with the replacement . Another member mentioned the module in the rack is programmed at the factory to your vin which caused his service light to stay on
Any ways of making this a clean install . Does install need a GM dealership or is this something most mechanics can do
Did it drive/feel different or just the CEL. Is it possible something got affected with the wire harness or a loose connection? That's a mighty expensive part/fix. Wish u luck with getting it resolved.

Remove the old rack and install the replacement yourself. If the power rack does not work, you need the dealer to reprogram the control module (part of the rack) to work with your VIN, that is called a "SPS" (Service Programming System), and probably requires 1/2 an hour of dealer labor. Then you can also have them do a front-end alignment, to set your toe angle.

Purchased a replacement rack with only 4000 miles for my 2014, should arrive today. Calling around to get quotes for install since Chevy wants $1000 for the install w/ alignment..
I called a local shop that said it was able to program the rack because it has GM programming equipment . Do you guys know if this is possible or can only GM do this ??
I would love to install myself but not sure I'm capable of this , especially with no write up on how to pull. Based on the quotes I'm getting , it must be an 7-8 hour deal
Looking at the service manual you have to drop the front cradle before you can remove the rack so I believe the 7-8 hours. Looks like a big job for sure.

I can do the rack in like 3 hours on the C7. Less if I had a lift. If you are mechanically inclined, its not that bad.

I’ve pulled mine twice and never dropped the cradle. That may be what the manual says but it definitely is NOT required.
Well too late , I just had GM replace it , $1000 later. Rides perfect again but still throws a code. The code doesnt appear on the dash just with the scanner when diagnosing . Not sure what thats all about but im happy again
