Default Z51 oil pan-can it be dropped in car???

I was using an arbor to punch a hole about the size of a dime for my oil return and as i was pulling out the arbor......the core fell into my oil pan.
Has anyone dropped the oilpan while still in the car?!?!?!?

Thanks

Damn, I hate it when that happens. Is that for your YSi? I suppose it doesn't have a self contained oiling system like its little brothers. I am guessing this tool is too big to maybe come out the oil drain plug opening? Maybe you can jack the motor up a little and just lower the pan enough to get a flex magnet in there. You'll have to wait for Ant or maybe Robert to weigh in on whether the pan can be removed.

I figure i will have to pull the intake to get upper clearance. If i can get it high enough it does not look too bad but that is a project for tomorrow.

Are you getting close to firing her up? Is the oil line the last step?

The oil line is about the last issue. Still waiting on my headers though......now this.

Ghost, I tried to do this myself, for almost the same exact reason. Mine is a wet-sump but it doesn't really matter much since you can't get the motor jacked up high enough to clear the springs and cradle. The oil pan simply will not clear the bottom of the oil pump since the oil pump protrudes down into the pan. Here's what I did, remove the two bolts on each side of the bottom of the motor mounts, jack up the engine and slip 2 hockey pucks stacked (yes actual hockey pucks) between the engine and cradle on each side.

I figured this would be enough but it wasn't because there's no clearance to slide the pan backwards since the bellhousing is in the way. So, I had to drop the cradle down about 2 full inches, completely. Meaning pulling the shocks and upper A-arms. Then I was able to get it off but I wouldn't recommend it because the cradle was sort of just barely hanging in there. I used some jacks and wood beams to hold it up temporarily.

My recommendation is actually to pull the motor. Even if you get the pan off, it would be with you prying it out of there. Meaning when you go to put it back on you won't have the proper clearance to get it up there without screwing up the bead of sealant you have to put on it. JHEBERT has done his in car but does the same thing that I described above with hockey pucks and dropping the cradle. (I got the idea from him). After I went through all of that, I won't do it that way again. Much faster to pull the engine and do it right in my opinion.

Thanks but i might be stuck doing it the hockey puck way. When i pull motors im nose facing out but in this case im nose facing in. Going to mock it up tomorrow to see if its feasible to get my hoist in a good position.

Wish me luck....

Same situation. I was nose in as well. I was able to get the hoist in there and pull the motor with the hoist on the side of the car, not in front. In either regard, GOOD LUCK!

You’ll need to put the hockey pucks in the mount pockets on the cradle, then add 3”x3” 3/4 pieces of plywood on top of the pucks so that the studs on the mount sit on the wood. With steering off and front cradle bolts only in a few threads, and the rear bolts out completely (rear of cradle strapped to engine block on right side) you WILL be able to remove the pan.

John

edit: I never touched the shocks or upper control arms, the clearance is there...I’ll also add that I have only done this on cam installs with the heads off.

It really was no to tough at all. Took about 45 minutes to get down. I used my hoist to suspend the engine and used 2 jacks and a 2x12.Used some grade 8 bolts for the valley bolts instead of the aluminum ones.

Would be nice if an aftermarket company would develop a pan gasket for it

Really was not bad.
I borrowed my sons transmission jack to put it back in and it was actually gravy.

Ghost looks like you got it made after all on the problem. Just saw this nice job now at least you know how to do it plus for sure no metal small piece's in the oil pan. I also agree on the pan gasket for them. Robert
