Letting local track rednecks drive your car for a faster ET
curious if any if you have ran into this scenario:
usually theres an old man (or, young one) running his new corvette (usually stickshift) at the track and its slow. 1.5-2 seconds slower than what car and driver says it will do.
he’s getting frustrated, and the local track rednecks are really poking fun at him.
he finally says ‘well you drive my car’, then the local track redneck drives it flat-out, like he stole it - to the time it should actually run !
i ran into this scenario once with a new c5 owner - back when it was new !
curious if anyone else has seen this scenario unfold.
and to be fair, the new sportscar could just as well be a ‘porsche’ or <insert other sportscar name>. This isnt necessarily limited to corvettes !

Had a buddy with a stick shift 95 Mustang with a little Nitrous on it. It went 13.2 on every pass he ever made, and we went to the track a lot.
One night, after endless ribbing from a buddy whose C5 had broken, he hands him the keys and says 'you can't do any better, it won't go 12s'....lol.
First pass, 12.7x...and he missed 3rd...
He refused to give the keys back and made a 2nd pass, 12.5x with like 3.5 MPH over the owners best pass. It was flat out hilarious.

Funny but I wouldn't let anyone drive my car just don't see it at all. I got a 1.27 60 ft out of the c5, don't want to see if someone could get any more out of it on my cost if something did happen.. Robert

No surprise at all. Somebody is always faster.

That’s stupid. I wouldn’t trust my car to strangers, even people that I know, not all of them are good drivers, or they could feel heroic once that they are on your Sport car trying to do stupid things. No way!

And just to add it's also about quality seat time. If you are practicing the wrong stuff and don't understand the nuances of what it takes to get the car down the track efficiently it can be somewhat of a waste of time.
So grab one of those rednecks and ask them to explain the technique and watch what you are doing so that when you do practice it's quality.

Saw it down near Atlanta a few times, yeah. Usually somebody with a Mustang/F-body or an older Corvette owner.

A friend at Bonneville was having trouble getting his car up to speed. He let me and my friend (both much more experienced Salt Flats drivers) each have a go. That night when we were all eating in one of the few decent Wendover restaurants (this was some years ago) someone asked the car owner how it was going. He replied, not looking up from his steak, "Just great, except these two clowns both drive my car faster than I ever have." Thanks, Dave!!!
(footnote... it took several more years, but Dave finally got the "nuggets" to drive fast on slick Salt!)

Owner of this car has done it a few times, can definitely drive any situation better than most the first time he gets in the car.

he as running low 13s, I ran once, didn't shift to fourth trying to cross the beams in third, ran it again and went mid/low 12s.
only difference is my C5Z didn't break and he didn't have nitrous. we were in Dallas (Ennis) maybe around 2007.

I would not let someone that I don't know drive it...but I did ask one of my friends drive my G8 GT down the quarter mile because I wanted to see and hear it go down the track. I wasn't too concerned about his capability because his G8 GT was putting well over 600 hp to the ground while mine was only around a measly 410 rwhp. I was just glad that his time was no better than mine
