Default Serpentine belt question

I have a 2017 base model 12k miles, it has always had a belt squeak when cold. I was cleaning my car today and under the hood, then I noticed that the 6th tooth on the belt is missing. What caused/causes this?

Debris in one of the pulley grooves or, less likely, the belt was not fully on the pulley, or, even less likely, one of the pulleys is misaligned.

Change the belt. I had a squeaky serpentine belt on my 1K resurrected Tahoe. Before I found it was the belt I re-greased all the bearings in the idlers and made sure it wasn't a power steering or water pump, or the alternator. Changed the belt, and squeak was gone. That belt looks tired, though with only 12K on it that seems low. Did the car sit for a while? I think that's what killed my belt.

Check the belt tensioner while your looking around in there. They have a tendency to blow up........

Worse than that - they have a tendency to blow up in the process of removing the belt and replacing it!

You guys were right on the money. I have been working on cars all my life and have never seen this. Thank you!

Absolutely crazy bit of bad luck, but on the other hand... now you KNOW!
