The OP actually makes a lot of really good points. I was just thinking today that if they put the base price at around $90k(which might still be too low according to some of the speculation here), is it really going to be worth an extra $40k over a Z51? If the 620hp number is true, you'll easily be able to surpass that by slapping a supercharger on a Z51 at the cost of $6-9k and get upwards of 700hp by doing so. I realize there will be other improvements like bigger tires/wheels, more aggressive body, etc., but I just don't know if a $40k premium over a Z51 makes sense anymore. The Z06/ZR1 were huge upgrades over the base C6, but I think the C7 is already so good that it's going to be a tougher sell for the new Z06 at much higher price point.
Having said all of that, I can't wait to see the unveiling and I'm pretty sure it's going to be the baddest thing on display in Detroit next week.

harder to cut the price when the new improvments are going to cost them more to produce. GM will over produce the C7 and make the C7Z06 too much higher to afford for the average Joe.

I agree with the OP. I think he is dead on. Look at the new Viper. It is sitting on lots and not moving at all and I think it is a nice improvement over the last generation Viper.
For me the Z28 is more of a collector car or store bought race car than a car you would drive everyday. It doesn't even come with AC as standard equipment.
Z06 base will be less than 80K for sure.

You cannot compare the Z28 to the Z06. The Z28 is a gimmick car made for collectors, there is absolutely no chance that anyone who is serious about tracking a car would choose a $75,000 Camaro that in way shape or form could keep up with a late-model Carbon package Z06 that could be had for less money.

Does anyone have or know where to find the sales figures for the ZR1 from 2009-2013? I'd be interested to know how many $100k+ Corvettes sold in that 5 year span.

Yes, Corvettes are "more attainable" supercars but not affordable. The Z will still be the best supercar value on the planet, even at 100K. At some point, there has to be some give and take; all selfish wishes aside.

I'm guessing base Z06 pricing will be surprising (low end), but that fully optioned ones will be surprising as well (high end)

They were selling quite well until the economy crashed.
In addition there were approximately 800 Z06's loaded out at around $100K.

Thank you for this data.
The 2009 ZR1's base price was $103,000.
Less than 5000 of the 215,000 C6 Corvettes made were ZR1 models. More than 5 times as many Z06 models were sold than ZR1.
It's pretty clear GM will not sell this car at ZR1 prices. It can't if it wants to sell any more Z06's than ZR1's.

The C7 Z06 was designed to be the best of the best and to compete with (actually beat it) the Viper, 911's, GTR's, ect.
So it's not an apples to apples comparison. The new Z06 is somewhere in between what the old C6 Z06 and ZR1 were with it being closer to the ZR1 than what the old Z06 was.
Vipers are sitting lots because it's still the same old brutish Viper that's always been built. Not enjoyable to drive, just a monster with a bunch of horsepower that 90% of drivers can't handle. So at $100,000, it's not near enough car to warrant that kind of money.
I think based on all of this, the base model Z06 will likely come in at $89,000, just to keep it under the $90,000 mark. Then a fully optioned one will be over $100K. That will keep it priced below the competitors and the outgoing ZR1.
But keep in mind, this car will outperform the outgoing ZR1. They are just combining the performance of the ZR1 and Z06 into a single package since there likely won't be a C7 ZR1. So the C7 Z06 is a much bigger upgrade over the base model than the C6 Z06 was over a base C6 and thus the price gap will be much larger.
Obviously with the ZR1's accounting for only 2.2% of the Corvette sales, GM has learned that people aren't willing to pay that much for it and that's why they don't have plans to build another one. So the Z06 get's better, but for much less money than the ZR1 that few people were willing to pay for.
