God, I hope MS will somehow recover from his skiing accident and live a normal life again.

Regarding F1 cars: Every once in a while someone makes a video of a "fast" street legal sports car and an F1 car on the same track.
For example:

Those F1 cars are scary fast.

Great video. That fat pig m5 is a poor car to compare with a F1 car though. The driver kind of sucked too. In fairness the F1 driver was not all business either.

Yes, they are.
I attended the U.S. GP last year in Austin and it was an incredible sight to behold.
Perhaps so, but other manufacturers have used pros before (Viper, Porsche, etc.)
I think the point was to show the difference between a BMW road car vs. a BMW F1 machine.

It was asked some time ago why the Corvette race team drivers are not used for these production car records. The race team drivers have said that driving a street car and race car are completely different driving experiences, and their experience in the race cars does not fully translate to the street cars.

They are doing 120 km/h in the corner, roughly what the F1 does in 1st gear...

My favourite quote is:

Drifting
I hope we hear what the "issue" was, but we may not. I obviously do not know the details of the incident, but here are a couple of observations. First, if you look at the crash picture and then compare it with the Z28 lap (link:
) Nurburgring Lap Times: 2014 Camaro Z/28 Tops Published Times | Chevrolet - YouTube[/url]), at about 31 seconds you will see the corner where the incident most likely occurred. There is heavy deceleration prior to a roughly 70 mph tight right turn. Notice the aggressive counter-steer by the Z28 driver at corner exit. I would guess that the Z06 got loose there, lost the rear, and hit right front first. A second observation in the GM release of the Z06 on track (
), at about 36 seconds, is the obvious scrape (bottoming) of the splitter or something underneath (mentioned by others in this thread). Note the heavy rear suspension travel which indicates that the car is generating a lot of rear aero downforce. Braking or aero could account for the front travel (compression). My personal supposition is that the spring rate may not be high enough for the aero forces being generated at high speed. Notice the relationship of the side skirt to the track and the extensive rear wheel travel into the wheel well. Stiffer spring rates probably would not be appealing to GM since it would definitely increase ride harshness. Bottoming on the track introduces some real handling issues. I guess that is the challenge of trying to get a good Ring lap time in an "as available" street car configuration.

They're still looking through the mountains of telemetry data they have from the incident to figure out why the car got loose. They may never be able to figure it out; it could just have been a slick spot on the track.
The key important part, IMHO, is that Mero is OK. The car can be replaced and they can try again next year if they have to.
