Default Exposed Carbon Fiber hood

Gents,
Does anyone know the process for the exposed carbon fiber option hood on 2016 Z? I got a quote from one of the venders $4,000 + the hood will need to be painted. My thought was to get a hood from a wrecked Z stip it then paint/clear it with the exposed stinger. Am I missing something?

The hoods on C7s are NOT made from appearance grade CF weave -anywhere- on the part. The B92 exposed CF weave stinger option is a local insert in the molding process - added as an extra layer to the molded CF already there. I discussed this exact thing with one of the engineers at Plasan when I visited a few month back... All this to say your approach would not yield the results you're after...

Yes, the standard hood is not a show-grade piece, meaning it is carbon fiber but will not have the weave you are expecting to see. The exposed CF stinger is a show piece that is inserted into a standard hood cut-out and adhered in place.

You can't just take a normal hood, sand it down, etc.

The exposed CF hood is actually a hood insert of exposed CF, not an unpainted section of the hood that everyone else gets painted in full.

If you were to strip the paint off of your hood, you would most likely be very disappointed that it does not look like the exposed CF you're used to seeing.

Here's mine. You can see in the photo a very thin white line around the CF. You don't see that in person, but if you run your hand over it you can definitely feel a minor ridge (maybe a tenth of a millimeter) where the hood meets the insert. Some people have said that the ridge is unacceptable, but I have to tell you that everyone who has seen the hood in person loves it. It is really stunning.

If it's an 'insert' then can a very thin piece of CF be made and stuck on somehow, similar to the sticker? Obviously fitment would be crucial.

I think APS makes an aftermarket version that looks cool...but $4k is a lot of coin...

Thanks to all who replied
Looks like I have the following options;
- Buy the exposed hood outright
- Find a wrecked Z with the CF option buy the hood
- See if any forum members would trade hood plus $$$ (member was going
to trade in his/her car for 2017.
Simular to folks who want the Sport seats vs GT.
Looks like option 1 is most likely

The show-grade CF weave is a part of the hood, likely just the top layer. Show-grade CF weave is not used in the painted hoods, so stripping the paint will end with a dull random carbon finish.

The line that is on the exposed CF hood is the paint line, the edge you feel is the edge of the paint, they do not clear coat it level.

If you designed a stick on aftermarket 'insert' it would stick up much further than a paint layer and since it is stiff CF would likely not stick on very easily.

The WXM Z06 carbon hood is now available in full carbon.

Pics can be seen here on the SEMA AF Z06

Wow! I even took pictures of that car while at SEMA and didn't notice that hood at all.
Sorry.

Gents,
I am still looking for a factory exposed carbon fiber hood. I have a quote from one of the GM venders for north of $4000 plus paint. In the mean time I found a carbon fiber stinger vinyl decal on e-bay (Company is out of AZ). Has anyone out there seen the CF decal on a Z car yet? This is a temp fix until I can find an exposed CF Hood. Thanks in advance!

Have you considered doing a high quality vinyl wrap in that area? Have seen some pretty nice looking stuff

Yes...I commented on the above CF hood, I posted a question before on who has the best wrap I found a wrap on e-bay but wanted to know who has the closest match to the GM exposed CF. If you have any suggestions I would appricheate the info...before I pull the trigger on the one for sale on e-bay. Any pictures would also help.

What is that CF piece called above hood insert? Thank you.

Now that we're (somewhat) close to the release of the updated 2017 hood, I'd personally hold off on any hood changes until we see what it looks like. Might want to incorporate its changes for airflow, etc...

If I understand your question, it's the B92 option code for exposed CF hood.

The carbon hood for the 2017 is the same PN as the 2016 FYI. I think all of you guys expecting to see aesthetic changes for 17 will be disappointed.

If the carbon fiber hood insert is just a super thin piece of carbon fiber inlayed or over layed on the factory hood, then does anyone make just that piece?? Instead of having to buy a whole new hood...Can it be ordered from GM? Unlikely but I thought I'd ask... Thanks.
