Default Pilot Super Sports evil in heavy rain

Just returned from a drive down I-95 to Florida in heavy rain. I took off my Pilot Sport Cup 2's and purchased the Super Sports because Michelin said that they were fine in rain. But in heavy rain when there was a small layer of water on the asphalt, the car really danced around and felt evil. Not fun

Interesting, I've driven the MPSS in pretty heavy rain and didn't think they were 'that' bad. Certainly they weren't as good as all season tires, but I wasn't dancing all over the road either. Either way, caution is the best approach in wet weather at 65-85 mph.

That is why my ZR1 has never seen the rain.

The Michelin Pilot Sport used to have a "V" tread pattern that was awesome in the rain. Disappointed they went away from that design. Great grip on both dry and wet pavement.

IMO the MPSS are the best rain tire you can run on a Z06 Corvette I've gone through about 5 sets between my C6 and C7. I have run many tire brands and the MPSS are hard to beat,...with that said you have a "stupid amount of power for the street and need to respect it in the rain". Yes the car does dart in the rain depending on your alignment and front "Toe" setting. Are you running zero Toe? You may want to check it, zero Toe is great for the track but sucks on the street. I run 1/8 toe in, which is standard for the street. It make a hugh difference.

Well, I sure hope you slowed down and were NOT still trying to drive the same speed you were on dry pavement!

I find that I have to keep the ZR1 below 60 mph to avoid hydro planing and even below 50 mph if water is ponding on the pavement when on Houston freeways. I have reasonably new PSSs on the front and the OEM PS2s on the rear.

I had the same issue going across Utah last year. A few times I just pulled off the road at the next exit and waited for the real heavy rain and pooling to stop and then get back on the road. I recorded it on the PDR just in case. I would post it but the amount of profanity may be an issue

I believe this is due to tyre width and not the actual characteristic of a specific tyre. In fact of all the street tyres available in OEM sizes, I'd bet the MPSS is the best all round tyre by far, including wet performance.

I have OEM PS2s all around on mine. When caught in the rain, just slow way down...

Same here rain every day in December lots of miles in rain and very heavy at times. No issues but I stay out of the grooves full of water
when I can. The non run flat SS is better in all respects.

I've been running the P-Zero runflats. They are pretty decent in the wet. My z07 is a daily driver so it hit a lot of rain.

However, the p-zeros have been a huge pain due to leaks. They just don't seem to like to hold air all that well, leaks all the way around randomly happen unless we seal it.

So I'm going to try the MPSS for the next set of tires.

The SC2's are for track only so those go on separate rims.

No the regular SS is quieter and has much better wet and lasts longer
Reviews say they are the best not the PSS. I swapped mine to regular SS has less noise and better grip.

Not my experience with my C6 Z06. The OE Goodyear's really sucked in the rain but my Bridgestone RE050A run flats drive fine at 80 MPH in fairly heavy rain on the Interstate, and I have my toe set at zero front and rear.

Not my experience with my C6 Z06 that has tires nearly as wide as the C7 Z06(275/325 vs 285/335 on the C7 Z06). My OE Goodyear's were terrible in the rain, yet when I replaced them with Bridgestone RE050a run flats in the exact same size front and rear as the OE Goodyear's, the car was then fine in the rain.
I've seen the exact same thing happen with my C5 and my Mercedes DD. Change brand/model of tires, but still the same size and see vast difference in driving(rain, dry, lateral grip, etc).

My experience is you MUST use weather mode. Makes a huge difference in controlling the power.

Other than that, drive conservatively and the MPSS is a great tire in the rain. I've had no issues with mine at all. Just remember, when it's wet, it's not a sports car anymore. It's a commuter with 650 hp.

If your still talking about the OEM goodyears (which I removed the first week on both my C6 Z06's 06 and 08) on a C6 Z06 your way way out of the loup! They were by far the worst OEM tire and nothing like the other tires out for last 7 years.

Just to be sure, did you change to WET mode?
