Default THE C7 Z06 Cooling Solution from LG Motorsports

Hi guys,

I know everyone has been asking about this for a few months now, and while we are still a few weeks away from parts shipping to customers it is close enough for you all to get a sneak peak at what we have been doing.

As some of you already know the C7Z06 on track at speed has some cooling issues. We found this during baseline testing the car, with Lou behind the wheel.

Our test car details
  • 2015 Corvette Z06
  • A8 automatic transmission
  • Z07 package with level 3 aero
  • Cup tires removed and replaced with Michelin Super Sports for test use
  • Motul 300V 10w40 oil used in all tests.

Baseline test
Motorsports Ranch, Cresson TX
77 degrees, sunny, light to no wind
Less than 10 mins after leaving pit lane for the track with water temps at 150 degree's the car had went into limp home mode due to over heating water and oil temps.

The car was 100% stock at this point.

Fast forward

Modifications done
  • LG C7 Super Cool radiator
  • 170 thermostat
  • LG HD trans cooler (replacing the fender cooler)
  • LG Prototype Stage II cooling system

LG Stage II cooling upgrade, no trim installed

LG inner fender vent

The above pictures are PROTOTYPE TESTING UNITS ONLY, final nose design and trim panels (carbon fiber) are not installed or shown in these pictures.

Testing data

Cooling test
Motorsports Ranch, Cresson TX
75 degrees, sunny, light to no wind
This time we started the car every session at full operating temp (water 190+, oil 200+) and every session of the day the car ran at least 16-18 mins on track with stable water and oil temps in a much safer range. The only thing that took us back to the pits was the stock carbon brakes failing, resulting in a loss of brake pedal. (our cooling ducts were not installed at this time, just the OEM brake ducts). Water temps have now fallen 40 degrees F, and oil temps have dropped over 69 degrees! With the final trim ducts, and seals in place we should see slightly more temp drops on the car. As a side result of this we have also seen intercooler air temps drop 15-20 degrees too!

We will be going back out for brake duct testing with the final nose piece on the car.

You will also see our coolers used in another kit coming soon as we have been working with another Corvette specialty manufacturer during final testing to supply them coolers and parts.

Test Video Full length

Key Notes
  • All coolers, lines, fittings, and ducts will be supplied
  • Template or pre-cut nose can be supplied for install
  • No loss of brake ducts
  • No loss of aero downforce (should increase front downforce)

PRICING AND RELEASE DATE COMING SOON

This is great news.

Excellent work by LG - much anticipated and will be very welcomed by the Z community.

Any chance of Lou going to the Hill Climb and breaking the record (which he set in his monster ZR1)?

We have been talking about doing that with this car.

I should have pricing from Lou soon on that, parts are done, and tested. Just waiting on final pricing and production parts to arrive.

Is that new cooler an air-to-oil cooler that replaces the oil-to-coolant exchanger or is it for additional water coolant?

That would be great to see. I watched the vids of the previous record breaking runs by Lou, and I puckered just watching. Dude can drive and his ballzz are far more metallic than mine. . . LOL.

If you guys can engineering cooling that'll handle Lou behind the wheel, it'll be a solid solution for anybody.

I think that is a very key statement there too. He is pushing the car to break...or trying to break it. If we can get it not to break then chances are you will not have any issues with it.

Outstanding! Maybe you can sell the fix directly to GM too because clearly they need some help in this area and they could retro-fit it to all previous cars that want it and install it going forward in a "track pack" option.

Anthony,

Just to understand the stage II portion. You will have two symmetric openings in the bumper to allow air flow to two new coolers. One would be oil cooler and the other cooler is for the supercharge, correct?

Yes there is a cooler on both sides and both sides will have the same vent opening on each side so it looks correct.

Yessss! This is the right way to do it. Added inflow, added outflow, added core capacity.

Dying to hear if it's an oil cooler, water cooler, intercooler, or a combination. Will it work with the GMPP second radiator added in?

Looks like he is going to keep the details secret just for a while longer. But, we can guess: IMO, at least one side has to be an oil cooler to drop the oil temps 69F. All water cooling could not do that.

Sounds most promising, just when I was about to give up on the aftermarket... :-)

I will tell you this....I did not add an oil cooler to it yet, but we are going to experiment with that in addition to this and turn the power up on the car.

Currently the only HP modification is our LG long tube headers.

Ok, thanks. In that context the 170 thermostat makes all kinds of sense.

Armed with the benefit of hindsight, , my post trailing Anthony's, can you even have this many commas, no oil cooler. The main post also says the intercooler temps improved as a side benefit, aka not because there is a dedicated extra core. I'd say they are both water coolers!

Oh the dream of having a plethora of water coolers is coming to fruition.
