Whether paid for by GM or not, I would have the dealer do the oil changes, especially on, so they can't blame the owner for something going wrong, and use the fact that maintenance work wasn't done by dealer.
Chevy's quoted reason for the 500 mile oil change is the chemicals that leach out of the synthetic gaskets contaminates the oil. While there may have been some failures due to shavings, it's not the "official" line.

GM was concerned about silicone building up in the oil.

Never again!!!!!! GM dealers treat all cars like they are a Sonic or Spark!! Now that GM is charging me 72k for a Denali and 100K for a Zo6 they better step their service game!!

Free oil change cost me ALOT of time and aggravation. Walmart for my oil, Napa gold filter, and 20 minutes to change my oil makes me very happy its done right.
Save receipts and carefully document your oil changes. Otherwise dealer can say you didn't do oil changes per manufacturer recommendation and if you have an engine problems your sol. I would also use ac Delco filters so Gm can't say you didn't use recommended Gm filters.

I would just as soon avoid dealerships or repair shops to perform a task as easy as an engine oil change. Too much time involved and too much potential for a bad result to happen by going to the dealership. Been changing the fluids myself on my vehicles my entire life with consistently great results.

Bingo. It wasn't about metal shavings that happened on a few isolated cars because of a few faultily made oil filters that introduced the shavings.

I did an oil analysis on my 2011 LS9 at its first oil change at 5k. This explains why my silicone reading was so high (53 ppm). This was a GM problem before the C7 generation even started production.

Yep, already do. I put receipts in back of book and document date of oil change.

Blackstone labs test for silicon (sand) not for silicone (gaskets and artificial *****) so the gaskets were probably not the problem they picked up on. Silicon readings can be high because of poor air filtration or just bad procedures not to keep areas clean that could wash into the oil system.

This mistake is common as Silicon Valley is a high tech area in NOCAL and Silicone Valley (Hollywood) is in SOCAL

Doing it now at 558 miles. I notice that my approximately 3-year-old bottles of Mobil 1 don't have the Dexos emblem, does that mean I shouldn't use them? The new bottles do have the emblem. Are they chemically different?
Thanks,

You will cause no damage using that 3 year old M1 5W-30. Any changes they made in the formula would have been small. There is more of a difference between the 5W-30 and the 0W-40 because of anti-wear additives in the 0W-40.
