Misperceptions about what we drive

..Robb Report magazine reviewed Z06 Corvette Convertible for 2016 "Car of the Year" match-up and I think they were smitten by it...
.... in article, journalists describe Corvette as a "Surprise". Why? I thought.
Gotta be:
A) It's a "Surprise" because they r too snooty for Z06.
B) It's a "Surprise" because they realize Z06 is... "World Class".

Our Cadillac dealer gave us a new Escalade for the day when we took our ATS4 Coupe in for oil change. The Escalade is absolutely awesome. I've driven tons of these type of vehicles and this one wears the crown. Wow! There should be some serious discounts with that sticker.

Yea all cars have gotten ridiculous and there is not that big of a difference in price between brands anymore in comparing similar cars. Landcruisers are 85k now .

Last year I was having coffee with a farmer neighbor and he was complaining that all of the pickups are too fancy now and loaded with options. Then a month later I met him and he was driving a new GMC Sierra diesel pickup with the Denali trim level It makes my 2006 GMC crew cab diesel, which had the top trim level at the time, look pretty downscale.

I don't think that owning a Z06 is that special. People don't know if it is leased or borrowed or being repossessed. I think it's something going thru your head. Most people could care less and there are many more expensive cars out there. Most people don't know a z06 from a regular vette or even what year you are driving. So don't sweat it and drive it if you want to meet with customers. Just my opinion OP.

Drifting
Guy at the gym walking by stopped me before I left my parking spot and complimented mine and asked if it was 50-60k. When I told him it was 94k msrp, he took pause and looked like someone cropdusted him, then continued complimenting that is one of the best looking yada yada etc.
And, super hottie crush walked by and told me nice car. Finally got to meet her and made my year.

Cars are expensive

A member on the Ferrari forum started what became a lengthy thread when asking what people thought about him driving his Ferrari to meet with a client. He wants to build his business and wondered how this might impact the attitude of the client.
It started me thinking given that some responded with ," live your life and screw what others think", to, you need to be careful about "image".
I know many here are loyal to the Corvette brand, as others may be to other brands. I suspect there are some people who view those who drive Corvettes, especially a $100,000 Corvette, in much the same way some view those driving a Porsche, Ferrari, etc.
What are your thoughts regarding driving your $100,000 car? Do you ever think "should I take it" to wherever? Does it suggest status or speed or accomplishment?
I would add we tend to "defend" our choices and view others as making the wrong and at least a less desirable choice. This can range from Religion to car buying.
We all have "preferences", We are viewed as "different" as soon as we distinguish ourselves from others. Driving an expensive car meets this criteria. Best

I'm semi retired now, but I do finances for the most part and consult others and help them build their companies.
They WANT to see how I live.
The flip side, I have a friend who drives a 2001 Honda Civic. Seriously. He's a stock broker. I told him, dude, I'd never listen to you. haha. You drive a $2500 car. You need to upgrade. But, he still goes to peoples houses with that turd. He's a good little $100k incomer, but that's it.
I think if he upgrades his clothes and vehicle, people will take him a bit more serious.
But, that is how I see the business world. I might be wrong, but it's whatever. I know I only deal with other professionals who have their act together.
I can't take you seriously if you come by my housing driving a Kia, yet you are wanting me to invest in your business. Sorry, just not going to happen.

I would ask the question of a corporate head hunter. I bet almost any would say NEVER to show up for an important appointment/interview in a sports car. In 11 years I never took my ZR1 to work and never had to answer any questions about it, because no one knew. I bought it to drive, not show off or stroke my ego.
Edit: I guess I should amend that, I've only had ZR1 for 6 years, but my previous sports car didn't go with me to work either.

Investing in businesses also might be significantly different between angel and VC levels, but if someone wanted, say, $2m from me to help grow their business and they were driving a nice new Ferrari, I'd ask them why they hadn't sold the Ferrari to reinvest in their business before asking for my money. Maybe there's a good reason, but I'd sure as hell ask. If they showed up in a Kia, I wouldn't really think twice about it either way.

Ehh. I know a surprising number of hyper-wealthy people who drive low end vehicles. It goes from point A to point B just the same, and cars just aren't priority for them for whatever reason.

Maybe I'm just a snob or something. Who knows.
It goes the same for my women. I have a bad fiance now, but when I was single, I had criteria. They had to make 6 figures or close to it. They had to live a certain lifestyle. And the only reason for that is because I knew most likely they would help elevate me and my lifestyle and not become a burden.
So yea, I always look at what people drive as some kind of success symbol.
Now, does anyone in here own a private jet? We need to chat.

The 911 is not (nor ever was) impressive visually and doesn't draw much interest from normal folks.
Even after a year I am pretty surprised that people quite regularly asked to take pictures of my car and I see people taking pictures on the highway all the time.
