Tire Talk - Conti's
Hey Guys,
So my SC2’s are at the end of their life. Chords aren’t showing, but at 15k miles, they’re cooked.
I was thinking of going to the conti’s but found a couple people saying they didn’t get much life out of them. (About the same as the SC2’s). Does anyone have any experience with the life expectancy of these tires?
Thanks!
Joe

Why not PSS? Other than 60% more expensive than Continental, they are much more gripper. If your Cup 2 lasted 15k miles, I'm sure you can push the PSS another 8k miles. 15k miles on Cup 2 has gotta be a record. Most got 1/2 that.

Don't know about the wear of the Contis, but one thing I noticed is that the actual tread width on them is much narrower than either of the michelins even though they are considered the same size.

I have Contis on 3 cars -- my Z06, my Ferrari 550, and my CTS-V. In general, they last about 20,000 - 22,000 miles, are incredibly compliant, handling is excellent (unless you're Mario Andretti), wet weather traction is superb, you have no cold weather worries, and they are less expensive. Of course, if you drive in a spirited fashion all the time, stick with the SS or Cup. My SS are now my track tires.

I would like to see what the conti's look like mounted on the stock wheels since everyone is mentioning how short they are :P

Appearance? Well, uh, um, they look sorta kinda round to me, including the sidewalls. I suppose there's a difference between run flats with rigid sidewalls or inner load bearing support structures and non run flat tires that rely solely on air pressure to support a car. Do they curve more at the sidewalls than the run flat Michelins and therefore seem narrower? I suppose they do but I can live with that considering the other qualities they offer.
Yes, the Michelin PSS and SC2s are the 9 and 10/10ths track tires.

I have the contis. I got them because SS were not available when I needed tires. I have two track days on super sports. And 4 full days and a few random laps here and there on the contis. They are not nearly as grippy. But, I am very pleased with them on the road. They have plenty of grip for anything reasonable on the street. They are quieter and more comfortable. They are still plenty capable for the track if you are not trying to set lap records. If you are just having fun they are great. Very predictable with minimal tire wear. Even when you are pushing them pretty hard.
They have better wet traction also. Which is important for me. More so honestly than 1/10th or so of a G. Due to the fact that I drive my car on roads a lot.
The tires do look different. But you get used to it quickly.

Hmm, not helping guys hahaha. (opinions are really opposed)
Tire rack has the conti's for $1100 and the PS's for $1850. In the specs, it does show that the Conti's are 1.2" narrower in tread than the PS's (!!!).
So are the PS's really worth the extra $750? Again, these tires would be for street (occasional spirited driving).

I like Conti's
I have had Continental Extreme Contact DW's on an C6 and was very impressed. I did not track the car so I can't comment on that. The wear rating was in the low to mid 300's which means under normal driving they might get 25K - 30K miles. When My OEM's wear out, I will look at them as a replacement.

I have 6000 miles on my Conti's, 1/2 gone. I got 10k out my corded MPSS. Conti's are comparable to MPSS but way better in rain.
Deep Tread. SEE...

The Z06 comes with the PSS Michelin which we know are runflats.
Michelin makes the SS non run flat.
According to Michelin and the reviews this is the best tire.
Problem is they don't make then in 335 only 325 that shows slightly
wider thread.
Then the front they have 275's. I have been buying the SS
in these in the 325 rear/ 275 front and find really it is perfect for the Z06.
The very slight less .2 tenths in height in not noticed.
They have a full thread of 10/32's. They are only 1450 a complete set.
This is the top choice for the Z06.
