Default Power Steering Failure - ON THE TRACK !!

Attended a track day today and was running the car fairly aggressively and got a signal on the dash of a power steering issue..... just before the steering wheel froze at 80 MPH and turning into a corner. Glad the brakes worked !!! Let the car cool down and the power steering worked again. Took it out for another session.... same thing happened. Loaded it onto the trailer and headed for home.

The cooling system was running about 240 when this happened. Outside temp was 88 degrees.

Ok, so I did the research here and could not find any threads on this issue.... anyone have any ideas / thoughts ??

Thanks,
Dave

Yep, had that happen last weekend. Oil temp was around 275 - 280.

I just ordered the GM duct add on that suppose to help.

You CAN turn, but it's work and you're not expecting it. I can confirm that the GM duct kit does work, at least it did in my case.

OP, I do believe there have been several posts about this issue from several CF members tracking their cars...maybe search for posts instead of threads ?

I am curious, what lap times were you running at Auto club speedway and what was the ambient ?

I got the part number and installation instructions elsewhere here on this forum, gave those to my local dealer and had them install it. If you are planningbtominstall it yourself, I recommend one of the sponsors from the forum. I've ordered several items from Cultrag and have been very pleased.

Here is the latest I've seen on the PS overheating solution. I had the kit ordered and installed through a Chevrolet dealership and haven't had any problems.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ails-here.html

Post #1 on that thread contains a link to a PDF file with the GM notification information, installation instructions, etc.

On at least 2 other cars, I've had the PS go out (but not for heat-related issues). It's always a big surprise esp. on the street when turning a corner, or sweeping into a curve. One more reason for using both hands (on the street, that is) because you never know when/what will happen.....

Works for me to. It's cheap, it's a TSB, no reason not to get it.

Sounds like a safety issue that GM needs to address!

They bill the car as a track car and we have transmission, engine and steering overheating. Somebody should order a recall. Nobody should have to spend their money and lose their warranty to fix these issues.

There are many posts by forum members (starting last summer) that agree with you, especially on issues like the Power Steering unit overheating.

Sure does.

I hope we don't have to wait until someone gets killed before GM issues a recall.

It's a street car. It is track-capable. I have not heard of any overheating instances other than from people who track the car, and there are GM add-ons that do not affect warranty to mitigate these heat problems.
