Default Am I the only one having Z06 bent wheel trouble?

These 2016 cast Z06 chrome wheels are not holding up at all. I had 700 miles on my Z06 when hitting a large pot hole on a county road that bent all four wheels. Was only going about 35 MPH. Collision insurance, after deductible, replaced them all. Now I have 2700 miles on the car and the left rear is bent after hitting a small pot hole on the freeway. The Tire and Wheel insurance I invested in, after the first incident, will only repair the bent wheel, not replace it.

So while they are fixing the bent wheel, I'm also ordering a new GM chrome wheel ($700). I'll keep the repaired wheel for a spare. Probably should also start looking around for a good deal on set of forged C7 Z06 chrome wheels that shouldn't bend so easy.

I hit a pothole with my C7Z which caused the left front and rear to blister on the sidewall. I replaced the tires on my own. Fortunately, both wheels were true.

Thanks Dave, I'll keep that in mind for the next time this happens. I've already put the order in and have a new wheel heading my way.

By the way were you the one I meet at Jet Chevrolet Sunday, July 24th and said you had a car identical to mine.

I don't think it's unusual with these low profile tires on chromed rims...

I believe that the chrome process seriously weakens the wheels structurally...

When I put new tires on my 15 the two left sides were both bent. I would get a small vibration above 85 mph. Had them both fixed without issue. So far on the 16 no wheel issues.

Merc Benz AMG wheels are "soft" too.

So you are probably not the only one.

Pot holes are just notorious for causing rim damage.

Bent a rim on my 2016 z06 in just 500 miles on the clock! Spectra Gray rims. I'm glad my wheel repair guy is 3 miles from my house. They take off the rim, and repair it while you wait. 1 hour and $100 cash.

bent 2 already - replaced 1 - will probably replace the other as it still causes some vibrations - the one i replaced was wreaking havoc with the entire car......it felt like ti was shaking apart !!

This should really be a GM warranty issue if there are that many being bent already. I wonder how many people have replaced them that aren't on this forum. If these rims are not able to withstand everyday driving on public roads without getting bent it becomes a safety issue. Maybe GM is not even aware of how many are getting bent and this apparent weakness in their wheel design. Here is a NHTSA site where you can post these safety problems, if enough people do this maybe we can get some action.

There is no way GM is going to warranty a bent wheel from who knows what kind of road conditions.

You're better off filing a claim with the county/city that maintain the road with the pot holes.

Last year I bent a wheel and tweaked a tire on my daily driver. Total bill for a wheel and pilot supersport was $858.xx. I filed a claim with the county that maintains that road and after a bit of time (I think about 2 months) I got $750 awarded to me as they didn't want to pay full retail for the tire. I'm sure I could have fought it, but I was happy to take what they were offering as I was unsure if I would get anything at all.

Low profile run flats are going to be rough one any wheel. Stop hitting pot holes!

Agree with that, I bent rims years ago on BMW M series way before the low profile tires we have today ever came out. I got where I watch for holes and bumps like crazy for years due to this.

What tire pressure are you running? Adjusting it a few pounds might help... Also, what driving mod do you typical run? Staying out of the track setting on street roads will also help... Just some suggestions, but it seems to be more bad luck than anything.

3 sets of wheels in play and over 20k just on the Z06 and no wheel issue,
then the other 8 Corvette's never a problem. Must have some bad roads.

My first real job was road construction doing summers at 16 and 17.

The new city road crews and the road product they make is pure crap.
Here is the worst new roads you might call them good if they were in Iraq paving.
They lay paving and don't bother to raise the utility covers and leave built
in rim busters in the new roads.

Have to watch for potholes

I wouldn't necessarily recommend going with a stronger wheel. If your wheel is not bent by the force of such a pothole it will instead transmit that force into the suspension and chassis potentially causing more / worse damage. The wheel might be a better failure point to leave designed into the system.

That's the same advice I would give someone starting out in Rally Racing when they build their first car. If you put big strong forged wheels on the car you've just changed the failure point. Something will still fail. That something might be the strut or the A-arm. yowsa!

The best advice is to put the car into touring on a rough road and DON'T hit pot holes. Depending on where you live I know that advice could be a little aggravating. <RANT>Unfortunately, we seem to have a lot of priorities other than fixing our roads. I'm not sure how we can continue to be a great country if our infrastructure is crap?</RANT>
