GM recalling 4.3 million vehicles globally for airbag software defect(includes Vette)
From Automotive News: (posted today Sep 9)
"DETROIT -- General Motors today said it is recalling 4.3 million vehicles for a software problem that can prevent airbags from deploying in a crash. The defect, which affects all of GM’s current full-size pickups and SUVs, is linked to one death and three injuries.
GM said the recall would not have a material effect on its earnings. The repair involves updating software in the sensing and diagnostic module that controls airbag deployment and does not require replacement of any physical parts.
The recall covers the following vehicles: 2014-16 Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet SS and Chevrolet Spark EV; 2014-17 Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice and Silverado 1500, Buick Encore and GMC Sierra 1500; and the 2015-17 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado HD, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra HD, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
More than 3.6 million of the vehicles are in the U.S., and there is no link to the industry’s ongoing global recalls for explosive airbags made by Japan’s Takata Corp.
GM said it was alerted to the problem in May via Speak Up for Safety, a program encouraging employees to report potential dangers that was established in response to GM’s 2014 ignition-switch recalls. The report said the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners in a 2014 Silverado did not deploy in a crash.
GM began investigating the issue June 7 and decided Aug. 31 to conduct a recall."

I'm surprised GM hasn't added the ability to update over the air like Tesla, Audi, and others. Would have saved them a ton of time and money in this case.
I've got a 2015 Silverado, a 2015 Escalade, and a 2015 Z06 (expensive year that was!)... so I need three updated! :-(

My dealership has already started updating the cars on their lot so you don't have to wait for the letter.
My 2014 Silverado goes in Monday and the Z06 on Thursday. Should be a quick update.

There is a list of affected vehicles by VIN that is available for viewing - checked mine last evening and mine is NOT listed
Here is the link to the PDF listing by VIN for ALL vehicles affected, including Z06's
http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...y_vin_list.pdf
And here is the PDF for the actual bulletin that was released yesterday afternoon

They told my son (Silverado) to bring it in Tuesday morning and it should be ready Thursday afternoon. What's up with that? It's a software flash, should take 20 seconds I'd think.... why would they need it several days?
I would have asked the service advisor, but I only got the info second hand. Anyone else being told it takes overnights?

On the Silverado there's another recall for a seatbelt cable that can break, hence the longer repair.
Turns out my Z06, built May of 2015, isn't on the VIN list anyway.
I wonder how certain we can be, when the vehicle is included in the "2015 Corvette" bucket but not on the VIN list, that we don't need the update?
Airbags and seat belt tensioners are some of those features that's you like to have working.

Interesting. I totaled my 2015 and the air bags did not deploy. Both my previous 2015 nor my new 2016 are not in the PDF but have recalls on the site. I wonder (1) where the list came from and (2) if the site just lists the recall because of the model and year? Either way it's not worth taking a chance on...

Mine wasn't in the PDF but IS listed when you enter the VIN in the recall site. Nice to have an autocross and a track day with an airbag issue before I can bring it in.
