When I come out of my neighborhood sometimes I stand on the gas, run it up to about 70-75, then let off and coast it down to around 45-50. When I let off, the trans is in 3rd or 4th gear, and does not automatically shift up to 5-6-7-8th where it normally would be around the speed I am traveling as it decelerates.
I hit the paddle shift to get the gear higher so the car is not revving so high, and then mosey on down the street. Does everyone's do this?
When I drive mine with some zest, the A8 will hold the lower gears longer than if I'm just driving more casually. The Z06 is quite eager to play if the driver shows the inclination.
I believe that it's this eagerness that can cause the A8 Z06's to have some overheating troubles when enthusiastically driven on a track for longer periods of time than you would typically drive with such enthusiasm on the street.

its because its in performance shift mode... the car thinks you want it to be in the highest gear for acceleration due to you flooring it earlier. Give it a couple seconds and it will realize you don't and the revs will drop and it'll shift up.
Get out on the road, get to 50 or 60 mph cruise, you will be in 7th or 8th gear. Have some space. Now, just blip the throttle. If you blip about 60 % to the floor, it will probably shift to 3rd or 4th, around 3500 rpm. If you stab it to the floor, will will probably shift to 2nd or 3rd, around 4500 rpm. You are now ready for a roll race. It will shift back to higher gear after 4 or 5 seconds if you just cruise after the blip.
Your OK in track mode, just don't push a hold center button for 10 seconds.
This is a bad *** tranny, once you learn it.
I stab mine almost every time I'm in it, just as u are about to lift the throttle, bang the up shift paddle rapidly 4 or 5 times. That's what you are looking for, as long as you are at less than 20% throttle or so it will upshift to 7th or 8th. If the car is going to slow the last shift or 2 may be denied, but at least you won't be going down the street at 6k rpm off the throttle under engine braking
It is not at all like automatics of the past, and trust me here, it's a good thing. Like it or hate it, the a8 will be in the c7 for the duration of its run.
You're in Performance Shift Mode, as noted. I don't know it's a wise thing to do that right after you come out of your neighborhood with the engine still cold though, I like my oil temp to come up a little before I start beating on the motor...
