Default 2017 C7 Z06 popping the P0106 Code? GM has a TSB on this issue

Two of Halltech's customers got this code (P0106) at the top of 4th gear during racing events, which produced the REP (reduced engine power).

There was initial concern that our intake might be the culprit, since both had our intake onboard for the race events.

Since then, GM has released a TSB for this condition which is posted on the Corvette Action Center here: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...0506-1315.html

Cause This maybe caused by a broken valve spring
Correction
Replace the broken valve spring if the valve did not drop and cause block damage
Service Procedure;
Remove the valve cover and inspect for a broken valve spring.
If a broken valve spring is found inspect the intake manifold for a collapsed runner.]
Please note that an aftermarket intake is not one of the culprits.

In addition, I received this from Joel, who was the first to inquire about this with us several months ago:

Interesting, I actually had a good buddy of mine recently throw the P106 code on his 2017 stock Z on the race track in the same spot I did, top of fourth.

He also had a slight leak in either the radiator or the aftercooler system, which the dealer was chasing, I believe they replaced the map sensor and found the leak, and last I heard he was OK... I think he did have an X pipe, so that in itself would allow a slight amount more air through the system.
Yesterday, another C7 Z06 customer who had our Stinger-RZ on his 2015 Z06, which has since been sold, was going to put it on his 2017, and ran into the same issue BEFORE he put on the Halltech intake:
“Saw your post on a P0106, MAP code and I was hoping you'd share your thoughts. FWIW, I bought and own one of your intakes.

I had your intake on my 2015 C7Z and love it. I have NOT YET installed on my new 2017 C7Z due to lack of time. I'm the guy in Tulsa who had you put together and bought the kit with the parts needed for swapping/reinstalling on a different/new car.

I'm experiencing what I consider a strange event on my 2017. Car is bone stock with the OEM intake and filter still installed and around 5,000 miles.

Every time I hit 165 to 167 mph in 5th while still accelerating the car throws a P0106 and goes into limp mode. Car runs great other than this deal.

I cleared the code with my OBD/CAN reader and did another run and same code at basically EXACT same RPM and MPH. Cleared again and did a third run and same code at EXACT speed and RPM. Car runs great under all other conditions after clearing code.

I'm running the OEM Mobile 1 5W30 and the day it happened was fairly warm at about 85 degrees. Oil temp got pretty warn at about 250 degrees.

Even though it has nothing to do with your intake I was hoping you'd share your thoughts. I was thinking maybe I got some oil back through the system and on my MAP sensor or ???

I bet the dealer would have a hard time replicating as it only does it at 165 - 167 mph in 5th or at least document "fail to replicate" on the service order

Here's video of it doing it 3 times in a row. It's a pretty short video as I edited out the time it took to clear the code.
Thanks in advance.”
Waiting for permission to post the video.

Hope this helps those that have or plan to purchase our intake system with any questions regarding popping codes.

I'm the guy who DOES NOT have the Halltech intake installed on my new 2017. I got the P0106 code like clockwork on 3 high speed runs in a row. My car is bone stock and details of what I'm experiencing are provided above in the Halltech post.

As stated I clear the code and all is well until I hit ~167 in 5th gear. Happens like clockwork at the exact same speed, RPM and gear.

I thank Halltech for providing the service bulletin and will be visiting my dealer....

I got P0106 at the track in stock 2017 Z07 hitting top of 4th gear into 5th gear. Car was going into reduced power at the end of warm lap.

Eventually dealer replaced the MAP sensor and the problem went away. No broken spring valves.
I was at the track last weekend and the car ran strong all 25 minutes sessions.

Seems that 2017 tuning is different from 2015/2016

Thanks for sharing the bulletin info.

From all these post I am not sold this TSB means much. It does not disprove the Haltech CAI does not pull a code on a 2017 Z06.

I have broken a valve spring in a racecar. You KNOW something broke. Per the TSB "Replace the broken valve spring if the valve did not drop and cause block damage"

The noise (if Mr. Piston and Mr. Valve get physical it is not a quiet meeting) and loss of power is noticeable. If the valve drops the code is not the worry. The worry is how much is a new motor going to cost. You certainly would not be getting the code at the top of a gear with no other issues with a broken valve spring.

All this TSB proves is that other things can cause the P0106 code including catastrophic engine failure.

For me I want to see a Halltech equipped 2017 Z06 that is getting the P0106 code debugged on a dyno.

I will let you know, as i got this code after doing Halltech intake and 15% lower pulley, going for a pro tune on HPTuners tomorrow!.

Will update!

I got the P0106 code with NO specified faults shown, just a "reduced power" message on the DIC. Lasted a short while then power came back... but didn't go into full limp mode.

After much reading I believe the issue was caused by too much air in the IC reservoir causing the IC pump to cavitate and that causes a 3 minute shutdown and reduced power, but gives no specified cause on the system. This issue was detailed last summer by GSpeed. It happened to me at end of day so I have to wait until next track day to see if that's actually the cause

Default 2017 z06

I too just experienced this in my 2017 z06 (A8) at exactly 170 mph the car went Into redused power mode. I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution to this issue. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just had it happen to me at 145mph pull on a BMS filter, went home cleared the code, put the stock filter back in and made two more pulls back to back and had zero issues. 17' A8

Mine is completely stock at the moment. From what iv gathered even in stock form it can happen at speeds over 160.

Last I heard it was "try a new supercharger" with no explanation as to why a new supercharger would make a difference...

Different map coefficients in 2017 might be a problem.

If this is the case it seems like a problem 2017 z owners will either have to live with or resort to aftermarket tuning unfortunately.

June 21st track day I got the P0106 code again, this time though it showed a MAP error...

The session was a bit longer than the clip shows here (edited out the first few laps). What you see is Lap 5 and then at the end of Lap 6 the car reduces power for no apparent reason.

Here are the engine stats...

Glad you were able to document the incident as I know it would be close to imposible for a dealer to actually replicate those conditions. In my case,I was only able to snap a picture once I got the redused power message. The next morning when I started the car the cel was gone without me clearing the code. I hope GM can correct this issue, Without us having to resort to the aftermarket for a fix (voiding our warranty).

Yes. 100% factory stock except for tires... took the Cups off and mounted Super Sports. DOT 4 brake fluid and Mobil 15w50 oil.

Dealer can't find any cause for the MAP error code... no hardware issues.

They've asked me to take back to track and if I can get it to do it again to leave the code in the system and drop the car off at dealership for evaluation (I trailer the car to and from track on track days).
