Justifying the upgrade charge to Z06

Was in a recent Spring Mountain Class with a young fella that had just bought his first Corvette, a Z51 coupe. He was a pretty capable driver so got put in a reasonably fast lead/follow group for the second days track sessions.
At the end of the second day I asked him what he had learned. His answer was "I should have bought a Z06." Obviously trying to keep up with even a poorly driven Z06 on a track in a Z51 was a daunting task.

I have purchased (mostly) or leased ~12 new vehicles in the last 10-11 years. I've had to shell out most of the 6% sales tax on each and every one of these (except the small percentage we were able to get back when the law first went into effect back in 2013, I believe).
Last year my car registrations totaled about $600. I can only imagine what this year will look like.

And in Ca there is no credit on Use Tax for a trade in. So on my 16 Z I paid $8400 and on a new one I would pay another $8400. So even if I could justify eating $20-25k going from a 16 to a 17 the tax would be a deal killer. At least with the $20-25k you gain something. The additional $8-9K of tax is simply waste.

The arithmetic on this thread makes my head hurt, I was told there would be no math involved if I joined this forum. Most dealers have a very sophisticated algorithm called the "4 square method" that helps customers make these tough decisions.
Anyway, get the Z06...life is too short!

I was talking to a buddy back in December about buying my z06. Basically, he said that he felt like he had been living too conservatively and wished that he had bought this Porsche about the same time I got my z. I said, you need to plan for your future but live in the moment. If you want the car go for it.
Literally two two days later he got ran over by a car.
Fortunately he is okay now, and was recently able to return to work. But this whole conversation made me take pause for a moment. It really can be over just like that.

If there is one thing I've learned from being that close to death twice in less than two days, it is: Life is short -- eat the cheesecake.
Buy the damn Z06.

Power!
I agree, 180+ hp makes a difference in your feelings about your car
when it seems EVERY other car has or will have 400+hp
wide body doesn't matter when everyone knows it isn't a Z06!

The j57 rebate has my wheels turning to magically make my 2015 z51 turn into a 2017 Z06... but I'm struggling with the final number because of sales tax in Michigan is painful for trading in. (Pay it on full price of new car)
My biggest struggle is I ordered my z51 and I don't want many things different. The black comp seats would be the same in the new car and I fee like after a couple weeks the street driving aspect would be nearly identical since the interior and what not are all the same
I would be going from a 1LT m7 z51 to a 2LZ m7 Z07 for just under 40k. For those of you that have done similar... worth it in driving experience?
Foolish as it sounds, the standing in the garage and staring at all her beauty seems to be my biggest motivating factor, I don't have the time to heavily track a car in the summer. I had intentions of tracking my Z51 and in nearly 2 years I haven't turned a single lap!

Thanks for the terrible influences everyone! The deed is done, check the car out Monday when I return from work trip and pick up Tuesday.
is it strange that I'm dreading saying goodbye to my z51? It was museum delivery and my first Corvette.

Congrats!!! I just upgraded from a '14 Z51 to a '17 Z06 last week and as much as I loved my Stingray there's just no comparison between the two. The Z06 looks better, sounds better and is just an absolute beast to drive. You're definitely not going to regret the upgrade.

Face it. Money being a non factor we would ALL have the top of the line everything. We all do what's best for us (hopefully) if this isn't your daily driver. That's a poll we should run. Very curious about that.
The only real difference I could see is someone not liking the stiffer ride of a GS or Z06 etc and may get a C7 or Z51 with mag ride. I cannot believe the rode stiffness difference between even the base vs a Z06 and don't even attempt to compare a mag ride C6 vs the C7Z lol.
My C6 F55 rode like a Buick in comparison. Doesn't bother me but it's noticeable. If I were 60 plus?
Maybe I would think why am I taking such a beating but in low 40's it's a compromise I'll make for the looks and especially the power of the Z06.

Congrats, beautiful car, enjoy, and take it to the TRACK you will be glad you did :-) Be careful though, if you mash the go pedal in the wrong spot, things can get ugly fast, take advantage of the instructors they provide at many track days in the novice category, and enjoy!
