"Big Brother" is watching...
OnStar sent me my first "smart driver" report today. It informed me that I'd had 51 instances of hard braking, and 198 instances of hard acceleration, along with suggestions on how I could better avoid such situations in the future.

Just bought a Caddy XT5 and at the time of signing, one of the docs was an agreement that I would not disable the OnStar system. Should have asked what would happen if I did do that or if I refused to sign it..
Big brother is there for sure and contrary to their statements on the issue, they're selling access to the data to the insurance industry.

I turned it on for my 2 kids and nanny/wifemobile, so turned it on for my Z06 too just for fun and reference.
I don't do much hard braking on the street, but BOY I do a lot of hard acceleration, and according to their map, usually in the same locations! It's almost like there's a pattern.
It's not Big Brother though, since you have to turn it on. More like Big Cousin Bubba. That info is =supposed= to be private unless you opt in to have it sent to insurance carriers for a discount, etc.

They called me while I was on the back stretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway at 160mph. They wanted to make sure that I was OK. It was funny as hell to all of the other Optima guys racing there that weekend.

What would make them call you on the back straight, did they say?

I actually hit the same speed 3 months later, on a road in Mexico of course, but they didn't call that time. I was just blowing the carbon out of it.

Drifting
Right after I bought the car they sent me either an email or a letter via regular mail saying that I had to sign some document or give my OK via email that I had read their contract and would adhere to the terms. I ignored it, and to make a long story short, I said I wasn't going to agree to a contract I never saw---------true story-----they sent me a ONE HUNDRED PAGE CONTRACT---all very small print---that they expected me to read, sign and mail back to them?????????
It went into the trash and they shut the service off---which I had asked the dealer to do in the 1st place when I picked up the car (claimed they couldn't).

I actually have pulled the OnStar fuse in my trunk fuse block....Turns those annoying lights on the mirror off, too.

I like the old days when your insurance premium was less each year as the car aged and replacement costs were reduced. These days, my insurance premium inches up every year without any violations or claims, just because they have to make up for the other drivers.

On Star: Big brother is watching
My "Savvy" accessory [Blocks low speed false signals] for my Valentine One radar detector plugs into the OBD for power and speed sensing. As a result, On-Star downloads are blocked.
The unheralded and largely unknown benefit of Savvy is blocking big brother!

Nice. Is the accessory specific to the Valentine, or does it also work with the Escort brand?
